Emory Athletics Weekly Preview: September 6th - 11th

The Emory Athletics Weekly Preview for September 6th – September 11th. This preview is to serve as a weekly snapshot of all upcoming Emory athletic events for the coming week.

Volleyball:

After opening the season 2-1 last week, the Emory University volleyball team returns to action this week with an away game against regional foe West Georgia before hosting the East-West Classic in which the team will play host to many of the top teams in the nation. The No. 14 ranked Eagles (2-1) open the week at the home of Division II opponent West Georgia (5-2) on Tuesday evening at 7:00 PM before playing three games over the course of Friday and Saturday against No. 2 Trinity (4-0), No. 7 Johns Hopkins (3-0) and No. 1 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (3-0). Also making an appearance at the two-day round robin East-West Challenge will be No. 16 Tufts, UT-Dallas, California Lutheran and WashU. Emory holds a 13-4 record all-time series record over West Georgia most recently taking down the Wolves in a thrilling five-setter last September. Against Trinity, who the Eagles play at 6:00 PM on Friday, the Eagles hold a narrow 14-11 series advantage over them, most recently falling to the Tigers in 2021. The Eagles faceoff against Johns Hopkins Saturday afternoon at 2:30 PM which marks the two teams first rematch since the 2019 NCAA DIII Championship. The Eagles final game of the weekend is against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps who Emory holds a tight 6-5 series advantage over with the most recent match ending in a tight four-set Eagles loss. Junior Carly Wallace has been a star for the Eagles in the early goings of the season as she has led the team in kills (29) and has the second-highest dig total as well (29).

Men's Soccer:

A strong start to the season saw the Emory University men's soccer team tie one game in a thriller and earn a decisive victory in another to bring the team's record to 1-0-1 to begin the year. The No. 22 ranked Eagles (1-0-1) return to action on Tuesday at 8:00 PM in Birmingham, AL to take on the Panthers of Birmingham-Southern (1-0) before traveling North for the Johns Hopkins University Tournament where the Eagles will face off against Mary Washington (2-0) on Saturday and Johns Hopkins (1-0-1) on Sunday. The Eagles sport a tidy 10-1-1 record against the Panthers all-time with the Eagles having won seven of their past eight contests. The Eagles haven't played the Mary Washington Eagles since 2008 and hold a 2-1 series advantage all-time. This marks the first ever meeting between Emory's and Johns Hopkins' storied programs. Senior Owen Hallauer leads the team in points through two games with a goal and the game-tying assist against Covenant last Friday evening.

Women's Soccer:

After starting the season 1-2, the Emory University women's soccer team returns with one game this week against East Texas Baptist as the Eagles look to even up their record in their first home match of the season. The No. 22 ranked Eagles (1-2) look to bounce back from a tough West Coast road trip as they play host to the Tigers of East Texas Baptist (2-1) on Friday at 7:30 PM. This marks the first ever meeting between Emory and East Texas Baptist University. Senior Kylie Hall paces the Eagles in shots on goal this season and scored one in the 5-0 dismantling of Berry in Emory's season opener.

Women's Golf:

The Division III reigning champion Emory University women's golf team is back in action for the first time this season when they travel to New Hartford, NY for the Hamilton College Invitational. The two-day 36-hole tournament will be played on the Yahnundasis Golf Course. The Eagles return the entirety of their national championship winning roster including the Division III Individual National Champion Ellen Dong, WGCA National Freshman of the Year Sharon Mun and Honorable Mention All-Americans Irene Wang and Heejo Hyun. The Eagles enter into the 2022-23 season as the unanimous No. 1 ranked team in the nation after their stunning showing at this past year's National Championship where they broke the championship stroke record by nearly 40 strokes.
