Emory Athletics Weekly Preview: 9/26 - 10/2

The Emory Athletics Weekly Preview for September 26th – October 2nd. This preview is to serve as a weekly snapshot of all upcoming Emory athletic events for the coming week.

 

Women's Golf:

After opening their season with a tournament win at the Hamilton College Invitational, the Emory University women's golf team is back in action this week at the MCC Intercollegiate. The MCC Intercollegiate is being played at the 5,613-yard, par-72 Montgomery Country Club Course in Montgomery, AL with the second and final round taking place on Monday, September 26th. The Eagles came into the tournament as the reigning champion after taking home the MCC Intercollegiate trophy in the 2021-22 season. The first round of the tournament was played on Sunday, September 25th where the No. 1 ranked Eagles finished in fourth with a score of eight-over par 296. After the first round, No. 7 WashU and No. 9 Centre tied for the lead each posting a 291 while No. 4 Methodist rounded out the podium with a 292. Competing for Emory at the MCC Intercollegiate are sophomores Sharon Mun, Ellen Dong and Heejo Hyun as well as juniors Irene Wang and Mariana Chong. Mun won her first tournament of the season and the second of her career at the Hamilton College Invitational as she carded a 145 (73-72) and was the only player in the field to hit par or better in both rounds.

Men's Golf:

The Emory University men's golf team kicks off its season at the Gate City Invitational in Greensboro, NC this Monday and Tuesday before playing in the first round of the NCAA DIII Preview on Sunday. The Eagles, who come into the season ranked second in the nation, will play in the 36-hole Gate City Invitational at the 6,682-yard, par-71 Starmount Country Club course against some of the top competition in the nation. The field of 17 teams consists of 14 teams in the top 25 including No. 1 Methodist, No. 3 Huntingdon, No. 4 Carnegie Mellon, No. 9 Christopher Newport and No. 10 Hampden-Sydney. Competing for the Eagles are reigning First Team All-American and Jack Nicklaus Award finalist junior Jackson Klutznick, honorable mention All-American sophomore Tony Li, All-Region selection sophomore Josh Qian, junior Michael Rosenbloom and sophomore Michael Burry. The 54-hole NCAA DIII Preview will be played at the Champions Trace Golf Course in Nicholasville, KY. Emory returns to the NCAA DIII Preview after finishing second at the tournament during the 2021-22 season. The Eagles finished the 2021-22 season with a fifth place finish at the NCAA National Championships which was the team's best finish since the 2013 championships.

Volleyball:

The Emory University volleyball team is back in action this week after taking last week off with four games on the docket for the Eagles. The No. 7 ranked Eagles (7-3, 2-1) will open the week in Cleveland, TN where they will face off against Lee University (2-13) on Tuesday at 7:00 PM before coming back home to take on regional foe Maryville (8-5) on Friday at 5:00 PM. Emory will close out the week with a conference doubleheader at the second UAA Round Robin that is set to take place in Pittsburgh, PA with the first match against No. 6 WashU (14-1, 3-0) at 11:00 AM and the second match against Carnegie Mellon (10-3, 1-2) at 1:00 PM. Emory is 19-18 against Lee all-time, having won their last six matches against the Flames while holding a resounding 23-2 all-time series advantage over Maryville. Against WashU, the Eagles are 18-52 against them all-time, however, Emory has dominated the matchup recently, winning the last five meetings between the two teams. The Eagles hold a 36-12 all-time series advantage over the Carnegie Mellon Tartans. Sophomore Alana Dawson has been a star for the Eagles to this point in the season, most recently helping Emory to a 2-1 finish at the first UAA Round Robin where she led the team in kills, averaging 10.6 per contest while playing primarily from the right side.

Cross Country:

The Emory University men's and women's cross country teams return to action this weekend as both will split their squads to compete at the Paul Short Run and the Alexander Asics Invitational. The Eagles will send half of both the men's and women's teams to the Paul Short Run on Friday in Bethlehem, PA while the other half of each team will travel to Fairburn, GA for the Alexander Asics Invitational on Saturday. The men's 8k at the Alexander Asics Invitational is set to get underway at 7:50 AM while the women's 5k will take place at 9:00 AM. The men's and women's team each placed first at the Julius Johnson Invitational two weekends ago as seniors Annika Urban and Brett Lucas each took home the individual crowns as well. Urban has won both of the meets the Eagles have competed in this season, most recently running a 17:44 5k at the Julius Johnson Invitational which was over a 1:15 faster than her closest competitor. Lucas' win at the Julius Johnson Invitational marked his first collegiate win in his fifth year with the Eagles.

Swimming & Diving:

The Emory University swimming & diving teams will open the season with its annual Blue-Gold Meet before traveling down the road for a dual meet against Georgia Tech. The Blue-Gold Meet is set to take place on Friday at 4:00 PM at the Woodruff PE Center while the Georgia Tech dual meet will kickoff at 11:00 AM on Saturday. The men's team returns seven 2022 individual national champions including the 800 freestyle relay team of junior Logan D'Amore, junior Nicholas Goudie, senior Jason Hamilton and senior Pat Pema as well as three members of the 200 medley relay: senior Colin LaFave, junior Jake Meyer and senior Ryan Soh. The women's team returns two 2022 individual champions to their roster: 400 freestyle relay teammates seniors Taylor Leone and Caroline Maki.

Men's Soccer:

The Emory University men's soccer team is set to open their conference slate against WashU at home on Saturday. The Eagles (2-3-4) will take on conference foe WashU (2-3) on Saturday at the Woodruff PE Center at 11:00 AM. The Eagles sport a 12-14-9 record against the Bears all-time with their most recent meeting in October of last year ending in a 0-0 draw after double overtime. On Sunday of last week, the Eagles took on the Rhodes Lynx where Emory pulled out the 1-0 victory thanks to a goal in the 60th minute from senior Joe Beare on an assist from junior Cobi Promislow.

Women's Soccer:

The Emory University women's soccer team rides a four game winning streak into the opening of conference play where they will play WashU on Saturday afternoon. The Eagles (5-2) are set to open their conference schedule against the WashU Bears (3-1-5) on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 PM at the Woodruff PE Center. The Eagles hold a 15-12-5 all-time series advantage over the Bears, however, Washu has emerged victorious in each of their past six meetings. The Eagles took down the Maryville Scots last Friday by a score of 5-1 with graduate transfer Mara Rodriguez notching the first hat trick for the Eagles since 2018.
