Emory Athletics Weekly Preview: January 30 - February 5

The Emory Athletics Weekly Preview for January 30th – February 5th. This preview is to serve as a weekly snapshot of all upcoming Emory athletic events for the coming week.

 

Women's Basketball:

The Emory University women's basketball team looks to get back into the win column this weekend as they get a chance at redemption against two of the team's recent losses. The Eagles (12-5, 3-4 UAA) open the week on the road in Chicago, IL where they will face off against the No. 7 ranked Chicago Maroons (16-2, 5-2 UAA) on Friday at 6:30 PM before making the trek down to St. Louis, MO on Sunday at 3:00 PM for a rematch of last Sunday's nail biting loss to the WashU Bears (13-5, 6-1 UAA). The Eagles are now 3-3 in their last six matchups with the Maroons after dropping a heartbreaker on Friday night by a score of 66-61. The Bears pulled out a 60-57 win on Sunday over Emory with a triple in the closing moments of the game to hand the Eagles their first two-game losing streak of the season. Sophomore Erin Martin had one of the best games of her young career against the Bears on Sunday as she pulled down a career-high 14 rebounds for the Eagles, as Emory continues to be one of the top defensive rebounding teams in the country with an average of 31.2 per game.

Men's Basketball:

The Emory University men's basketball team is no stranger to thrillers as each of its last five games have been decided by four points or fewer or gone into overtime and now the team enters into the latter half of the conference schedule tied for the lead atop the UAA. The No. 16 Eagles (14-4, 5-2 UAA) will begin the week with a date against the Chicago Maroons (8-10, 1-6 UAA) in Chicago, IL on Friday at 8:30 PM before traveling to St. Louis, MO on Sunday at 1:00 PM where they look to knock off the WashU Bears (14-4, 5-2 UAA) in a heavyweight matchup of the UAA's top teams. The Eagles have won ten of the last 14 matchups against the Maroons with the most recent win coming in an exhilarating 79-75 victory in overtime this past Friday. Against the Bears, Emory has won five of its past seven matchups but on Sunday the Eagles will be looking for revenge after falling to the Bears 72-69 this past Sunday. Senior Mason Johnson had one of the best stretches over the last two games as he averaged 22 points per game while shooting nearly 70% from the floor and was instrumental in the overtime period that gave the Eagles the victory against Chicago on Friday.

Swimming & Diving:

After competing at the University of Georgia last weekend, the Emory University swimming & diving team is back in action this weekend when it will compete in the Auburn First-Chance Invitational. The Eagles will travel to Auburn, AL for the Auburn First-Chance Invitational on Friday, February 3rd and Saturday, February 4th in the James E. Martin Aquatic Center for their final regular season meet before beginning their postseason the following weekend. Graduate student Jason Hamilton showed out in the UGA Dual Meet as he was one of four event winners for the Eagles, recording a time of 1:57.03 in the 200 Breast to earn the win. Senior Caroline Maki was the star of the Eagles final dual meet of the season as she won the 100 Freestyle with a time of 50.48 which ranks fourth nationally.

Indoor Track & Field:

The Emory University indoor track & field team is back in action this weekend, after taking last weekend off, as they travel back to South Carolina as the regular season begins to wind down. The Eagles will travel to Columbia, SC for the second time in the last three weekends as they will be taking part in the South Carolina Invitational that will take place on Friday and Saturday with events kicking off at 10:00 AM. Competing at the Carolina Challenge two weeks ago, senior Annika Urban continued to add to her legendary career as she registered a time of 4:56.66 in the one mile run which is the third fastest time in program history and sits as the sixth fastest time in the country so far this season. Senior Spencer Moore, also competing in the one mile run, showed out with a time of 4:09.86 which established a new program record and is the 11th best time in Division III this season.
