Emory Athletics Weekly Preview: February 6-12

The Emory Athletics Weekly Preview for February 6th – February 12th. This preview is to serve as a weekly snapshot of all upcoming Emory athletic events for the coming week.

 

Swimming & Diving:

The Emory University swimming & diving team will begin postseason action this week as the team plays host to the University Athletic Association Championships in the Woodruff PE Center. The Eagles will host the UAA Championships beginning on Wednesday, February 8th and they will continue until Saturday, February 11th with preliminaries beginning at 10:00 AM and the finals starting at 5:30 PM on each day of the meet. Both the men's and women's team have won 23 consecutive UAA titles with the women having won 29 total while the men have won all of their UAA titles during their current streak. At last year's UAA Championship, the men won nine total events while also racking up 23 total All-UAA performances across the meet. The women dominated last year's UAA Championship as well, registering 14 event titles while also tallying an impressive 34 All-UAA selections. The men return the 2022 UAA Diver of the Year in senior Lucas Bumgarner as well as the UAA Rookie of the Year in sophomore Jeff Echols. For the women, they return the 2022 UAA Swimmer of the Year in graduate student Taylor Leone as well as UAA Sophomore Rookie of the Year junior Megan Jungers. The Eagles are led by 2022 men's and women's UAA Coach of the Year Jon Howell who is in his 25th year at the helm of the program.

Men's Basketball:

The Emory University men's basketball team, coming off a weekend in which they split tight contests, stay on the road this weekend as they take on two of the UAA's top teams. The No. 20 ranked Eagles (15-5, 6-3 UAA) will travel to Pittsburgh, PA for a matchup with the Carnegie Mellon Tartans (14-6, 6-3 UAA) at 7:30 PM on Friday before making the trek to Cleveland, OH to take on the Case Western Reserve Spartans (16-3, 6-3 UAA) on Sunday at 11:00 AM. The Eagles, Tartans and Spartans all hold a 6-3 record in conference play entering into the weekend which sees them tied for second in the UAA standings while the No. 21 ranked WashU Bears hold sole possession of first with a 7-2 UAA record. The Eagles sport a 45-22 record against the Tartans all-time as they entered into the season with a 15-game winning streak, however, the Eagles dropped their first matchup against the Tartans earlier this season in a 78-71 contest. Against the Spartans, the Eagles hold a 37-21 all-time record with a 21-2 record in their last 23 meetings. The most recent matchup between the two teams was an overtime thriller in early January that Emory won 90-81. The Eagles come into the weekend with a top ten defense in Division III as they have held their opponents to a measly 37.4% shooting from the field. Freshman Benjamin Pearce continues to impress in his debut season as he was instrumental in the Eagles comeback victory over Chicago on Friday as he finished the game with a stat line of 16 points, six assists, six rebounds and three steals.

Women's Basketball:

Coming off an upset victory over No. 10 Chicago on Friday evening, the Emory University women's basketball team remains on the road for two more high octane conference matchups this weekend. The Eagles (13-6, 4-5 UAA) will travel to Pittsburgh, PA on Friday for a matchup with the Carnegie Mellon Tartans (11-9, 2-7 UAA) at 5:30 PM and will follow that up with a contest on Sunday at 1:00 PM against the Case Western Reserve Spartans (13-7, 4-5 UAA) in Cleveland, OH. The Eagles are currently tied for the fourth best conference record at 4-5 with the Spartans while the Tartans currently hold down the seventh spot on the conference standings. The Eagles hold a resounding 45-21 all-time series advantage over the Tartans as Emory currently sports a nine-game winning streak over Carnegie Mellon with the most recent game ending on a thrilling alley-oop buzzer beating layup from senior Mariane Auza in the Woodruff PE Center. The Eagles are 28-29 all-time against the Spartans with Emory having won four of the last five matchups. The most recent victory over Case Western Reserve came in a 20-point drubbing on the Eagles home floor back in early January. The Eagles three-point percentage continues to rise over the course of the season as they are now up to 32.9% for the season which is the 32nd best mark in the nation. Senior Claire Brock was phenomenal in the Eagles upset over No. 10 Chicago on Friday evening as she led all scorers with 24 points scoring 20 of her points in the second half.

Baseball:

The Emory University baseball team kicks off the 2023 season this weekend as they travel to Montgomery, AL for the Huntingdon Firehouse Classic. The Eagles will open the season against the Rhodes Lynx at 1:00 PM on Friday and will follow that up on Saturday against the Mississippi University for Women before closing out opening weekend against the Huntingdon Hawks on Sunday at 5:00 PM. Emory brings back 27 returners from last year's UAA Championship team including seven of the nine members of the regular batting order. The Eagles return All-UAA Second Team member senior Jack Masonis who led the team in triples and was second in doubles and RBI last season. The Eagles also return the reigning UAA Coaching Staff of the Year who are led by head coach Mike Twardoski who is entering his 24th season at the helm of the program.

Indoor Track & Field:

The Emory University indoor track & field will split the team this weekend as half of the team will travel to Boston, MA for the BU Hemery Valentine meet while the other half of the team will travel across state lines for the Bulldog Invitational in Birmingham, AL. Both meets will begin on Friday, February 10th and close out competition on Saturday, February 11th. The Eagles are closing in on postseason competition which will begin with the UAA Indoor Championships during the last weekend of February in Waltham, MA. The Eagles established four program records at the South Carolina Invitational this past weekend. For the women, senior Annika Urban ran a time of 4:50.74 in the one mile run breaking a five year old program record and notching the second fastest time in Division III this season. For the men, freshman Henry Brandstadter broke his own program record in the long jump as he registered a distance of 7.40m beating his old record by 0.19m and setting the top mark in the country this season. Senior Spencer Moore established two program records at the South Carolina Invitational. Moore broke his own record in the one mile run with a time of 4:09.07 and was part of the DMR team along with junior Spencer Watry, freshman Bryce Wurster and sophomore Marcus Cheema who set a new program best mark of 9:57.31 which is the third fastest time in the nation this year.

Women's Tennis:

The Emory University women's tennis will open the 2023 Spring schedule on Saturday at 2:00 PM against Georgia Gwinnett College in Gwinnett, GA. The Eagles will open their Spring season under the guidance of newly named Head Coach Bridget Disher who served as the Interim Head Coach for the duration of the Fall semester. Emory will look to open the Spring the way they left off the Fall with senior Stephanie Shulman earning All-American status by virtue of being the ITA South Regional singles champion.
