Emory Athletics Weekly Preview: February 13-19

The Emory Athletics Weekly Preview for February 13th – February 19th. This preview is to serve as a weekly snapshot of all upcoming Emory athletic events for the coming week.

 

Baseball:

The Emory University baseball team will play their first game of the season at home this week after only getting in one game in the first weekend of play due to weather cancellations. The Eagles (0-1) will host the Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels on Tuesday at 2:00 PM for Emory's first game in Chappell Park this season. The Eagles sport a 54-21 all-time record against the Stormy Petrels going 2-1 against them last season. The Eagles dropped their season opener last Friday to the Rhodes Lynx, however, sophomore Jack Halloran had an impressive opener going 2-for-4 at the plate and also notching a stolen base. Former closer Aaron Mishoulam had a standout day as well, holding the Lynx hitless through four innings of work.

Men's Tennis:

The Emory University men's tennis team kicks off its Spring regular season play with matches against two accomplished Division III opponents. The Eagles will play the Sewanee Tigers on Friday at 3:00 PM in Sewanee, TN and will stay in Tennessee for a neutral matchup against the Kenyon Owls on Saturday at 12:00 PM. The Eagles are coming off of a successful Fall season in which junior Nolan Shah and freshman John Lasanajak were named ITA All-Americans by virtue of winning the ITA South Regional doubles title. In addition, Shah earned All-American status by virtue of winning the ITA South Regional singles title. The Eagles come into the Spring season ranked 10th in the ITA Collegiate rankings poll.

Indoor Track & Field:

The Emory University indoor track & field team is coming off yet another successful weekend as the team continues to produce program records. The Eagles will compete in the U of SC Open in Columbia, SC on Friday which marks their final meet before the UAA Championships in the final weekend of February. Senior Annika Urban continues to break records everywhere she goes as she established the program record in the 3,000m run with a time of 9:28.14, beating the previous school record by over 30 seconds, at the BU Hemery Valentine Invitational. Junior Spencer Watry had his best meet of the season at the BU Hemery Valentine Invitational as he set the second fastest time in program history in the 800m run (1:52.26) while he was also part of the DMR team that established the fastest time in the school's history (9:53.00).

Women's Basketball:

The Emory University women's basketball team, coming off of a stellar weekend with back-to-back wins over conference opponents, will be back at home this weekend for their final two home games of the regular season. The Eagles (15-6, 6-5 UAA) will match up against the No. 6 ranked NYU Violets (19-2, 9-2 UAA) on Friday at 5:30 PM before taking on the Brandeis Judges (6-16, 1-10 UAA) on Sunday at 2:00 PM. The Eagles are 20-46 against the Violets all-time with the most recent face off between the two ending in a 76-63 victory for NYU earlier this season. The Eagles have fared well against the Judges, sporting a 39-27 record all-time against them, including a current nine-game winning streak, with their most recent victory coming on the road earlier this year in a 77-58 take down of Brandeis. Emory continues to fare well against conference opponents but it is the play of sophomore Daniella Aronsky that has really elevated the Eagles in recent weeks. Aronsky, who registered seven more assists in the two games this past weekend, has recorded 144 total assists this season which is 12 away from breaking the record set by Lindsey Tse in the 2017-2018 season. Aronsky also continues to shoot at a blistering rate from three as she went 8-for-15 from three point land this weekend to add to her nation leading 49.1% shooting from beyond the arc.

Men's Basketball:

The Emory University men's basketball team returns home this weekend for their final games in the Woodruff PE Center of the regular season. The Eagles (15-7, 6-5 UAA) are set to face off against the NYU Violets (15-7, 4-7 UAA) on Friday at 7:30 PM and will follow that up with a game against the Brandeis Judges (12-10, 4-7 UAA) on Sunday at 12:00 PM. The Eagles hold a 34-36 record against the Violets all-time, however, they have won nine straight over the Violets including a 95-91 scoring bonanza earlier this season. Emory sports a 39-30 record over the Judges all-time which includes a current 12-game home winning streak over the Judges. The matchup between the Eagles and the Judges earlier season was an overtime thriller that Emory won 73-71 with senior Mason Johnson scoring the lone bucket of the overtime period. Freshman Benjamin Pearce has had a debut season for the history books as he has tallied 389 points which is just 20 shy of the freshman single-season scoring record set by Romin Williams in the 2017-2018 season.

Swimming & Diving:

The Emory University swimming & diving team is coming off yet another fantastic UAA Championship as they head into the closing stretch of the regular season. The Eagles will host the Emory Invitational in the Woodruff PE Center on Friday and Saturday which will mark the final regular season swim meet of the season. The Eagles will use the meet as an opportunity to get the swimmers who are on the brink of nationals contention one last chance to get the times they need to qualify for the national meet. Both the men and women won their 24th consecutive UAA title this past week as the women won comfortably by over 200 points while the men came down to the wire winning the team title by just 25.5 points. Senior Lucas Bumgarner continued to grow his legacy as he was named the UAA Diver of the Year for the fourth consecutive year as he swept both events this past weekend. Senior Caroline Maki was named the UAA Swimmer of the Year as she helped account for six event titles and three UAA records.

Softball:

The Emory University softball team kicks off its season this weekend with four games at home in Cooper Field. The Eagles begin their season on Saturday with a doubleheader against the LaGrange Panthers at 12:00 PM and 2:00 PM and will follow those games up with another doubleheader in Cooper Field this time against the Pacific Lutheran Lutes at 12:00 PM and 2:00 PM on Sunday. The Eagles return five players from last year's roster including starting pitcher junior Natalie Swift as well as senior utility player Tyler Miller. The 2022 season was the Eagles first full season since 2019 and they finished with a record of 18-20 and 7-13 in UAA play. Emory graduated four All-UAA members from last year's squad in Mattie Ryan, Megan Weisenberg, Natalie Costero and Allie Moberg.
