Emory Athletics Weekly Preview: March 13-19

The Emory Athletics Weekly Preview for March 13th – March 19th. This preview is to serve as a weekly snapshot of all upcoming Emory athletic events for the coming week.

 

Swimming & Diving:

The Emory University swimming & diving team will be competing for a chance at a national title this week as they travel to Greensboro, North Carolina to take on the top swimming competition in the nation at the NCAA Division III Championships. Both the men and women come into championship week as the second ranked teams in the nation while Kenyon holds down the one spot in both competitions. The men look to repeat as champions this year as they won a thriller at the championships last year for their second title in program history. After a second place finish at last year's championships, the women look to get back to their winning ways this year as they look to capture their 13th title in program history. The Eagles will be sending 39 total athletes to compete at this week's championships, 20 from the women's team and 19 from the men's. Set to compete for the Emory women are: graduate students Marianne Allard, Taylor Leone, seniors Anna Glowniak, Sammie Kass, Caroline Maki, Savannah Sowards, juniors Fiona Arwood, Moshelle Borjigin, Sloan Donovan, Penelope Helm, Mehan Jungers, Tess Klugherz, sophomores Jada Chatoor, Rosalie Gaudiani, Ali Kaiser, Ariana Khan and freshmen Penny Celtnieks, Isabel Huang, Meredith Liu, Jane Sanderson. The men's national team roster includes: graduate students Jason Hamilton, Justin Lum, seniors Lucas Bumgarner, Colin LaFave, Will O'Daffer, Pat Pema, Lawrence Redmond, Ryan Soh, juniors Ryan Gibbons, Nicholas Goudie, Jake Meyer, sophomores Jeff Echols, Alexander Pollack, Crow Thorsen, Zachary Zhao and freshmen Sven Becker, Caden Bjornstad, Henri Bonnault and Will Kohn. The NCAA Championships open Wednesday morning, March 15, and will conclude Saturday night, March 18. Competition will take place at 10:00 AM each morning with preliminary sessions with the finals to occur each evening starting at 6:00 PM. The Old Dominion Athletic Conference will serve as the hosts of this year's NCAA Championships.

Softball:

After suffering two tough losses at home to the Huntingdon Hawks last weekend, the Emory University softball team is back in action this week as they close out a ten-game homestand before taking to the road to finish out the week. The Eagles (8-4) start the week at Cooper Field at 3:00 PM on Tuesday when they are set to take on the Rhodes Lynx (6-14) before playing back-to-back games at home on Wednesday and Thursday at 3:00 PM against the Maryville Scots (5-7). The Eagles will travel to Demorest, Georgia to finish out their week on Saturday against the No. 25 ranked Piedmont Lions (11-5) at 4:00 PM. While they haven't played since 2017, the Eagles sport a 14-3 all-time record against the Lynx with Emory on a current ten-game winning streak over Rhodes. Emory holds a 47-12 advantage in the all-time series count when facing off against the Scots, however, Maryville has emerged victorious in the last two meetings between the two teams. Emory has won five of their last six against the Lions and sports an impressive 36-14 record over Piedmont in the all-time series. Senior Tyler Miller has been on fire this season as she has turned in a batting average of .605 while leading the team in hits (23), RBI (28) and home runs (5).

Baseball:

After playing in two nail biter games against the No. 1 ranked Birmingham-Southern Panthers, the Emory University baseball team is back on the mound this week with four more games against regional foes. The Eagles (9-5) begin the week at Chappell Park where they are set to take on the Huntingdon Hawks (10-4) on Tuesday at 3:00 PM before taking part in a three-day series against the No. 25 ranked Piedmont Lions (10-5) with the Eagles on the road on Friday before coming back for home games against the Lions on Saturday and Sunday. The Eagles are a stellar 42-19 against the Hawks with Emory having won five of the last seven games between the two including, most recently, a ten inning thriller that Emory won 10-5. Emory holds a winning record over Piedmont at 43-28 in the all-time series with the Eagles having won four of the last five matchups between the two teams. Senior Mike Golob was a stud in relief for the Eagles last week as he lasted 7.1 innings giving up just one unearned run and striking out five batters to pick up a win for his efforts.

Track & Field:

After finishing out the indoor track & field season last weekend, the Emory University track & field team will begin the outdoor season this weekend as they play host to the Emory Spring Break Classic on Friday and Saturday on Emory's campus. The meet is set to get underway at 2:00 PM on Friday with the men's hammer as the Eagles look to kick off their season with a strong showing at their home event. The Eagles are coming off a magnificent showing at the NCAA Division III Indoor Championships where they garnered three All-Americans and one individual national champion. Senior Annika Urban put on a historic performance winning the one mile run with a time of 4:43.17 becoming the first Eagle to win an individual title in any event in program history. Urban's time also set the NCAA Championship record which had been held since 2005 as she shattered her own program record in the process. On top of her prowess in the one mile run, Urban also earned All-American status in the 3,000m run where she finished in third place after turning in a time of 9:32.05. Freshman Henry Brandstadter became the first Eagle to earn an All-American honor since 2018 when he leapt for a distance of 7.10m in the long jump to place eighth in the event.

Men's Golf:

After a second place finish at the UAA Championships this past weekend, the Emory University men's golf team returns to the greens this weekend as they travel South for the 54-hole Jekyll Island Collegiate Invitational on Friday through Sunday. The tournament will be played on the 6,700-yard, par-72 Jekyll Island Golf Club/Pine Lakes course in Jekyll Island, Georgia. After falling to No. 5 Carnegie Mellon in the UAA Championship match, the No. 3 ranked Eagles look to return to their winning ways this weekend as they turned in a third place finish at this meet last season. For their performances in the UAA Tournament sophomore Michael Burry and junior Jackson Klutznick were named to the UAA All-Tournament team marking both of their first appearances on the team.

Men's Tennis:

Coming off of a dominant win over George Fox at the Stag-Hen Invitational, the Emory University men's tennis team looks to stay in the win column with three more matches on tap for this weekend. The No. 8 ranked Eagles (8-2) will begin their six-game homestand against No. 10 Denison (6-1) at 2:00 PM and then on Saturday will play in back-to-back matches against Birmingham-Southern (7-1) at 11:00 AM and then against Washington College (0-3) at 3:00 PM. The Eagles and Denison Big Red have played just four times before with the Eagles having won three of the four including most recently an 8-1 victory in 2011. The Eagles are 4-7 against the Birmingham-Southern Panthers all-time but the two teams haven't squared off since 2000. Against Washington College, the Eagles sport a 7-3 record all-time although similar to the other two matchups this weekend these two teams haven't faced off since the 2002 season. Graduate student Charlie James had a successful week last week as he went 3-0 in singles in the No. 4 spot and 2-1 in the No. 1 spot for doubles.

Women's Tennis:

The Emory University women's tennis team is back in action this weekend after two weeks off where they are set to take on SCAD Atlanta on Sunday at 12:00 PM in the Woodruff PE Center. The No. 9 ranked Eagles (3-3) will take on SCAD and the match will be immediately followed with a retirement ceremony for former Head Coach Amy Bryant in the WoodPEC. In the Eagles most recent match against Sewanee two weeks ago in which Emory won 5-0, freshmen Emily Kantrovitz and Iris Berman picked up two solid victories in both their singles and doubles matches.
