Bats Carry Emory Baseball in Doubleheader Sweep of DePauw

The Emory University baseball team's offense was in full display Saturday afternoon, combining for 23 runs to sweep a doubleheader over visiting DePauw University. With the two wins, the Eagles improve to 5-1 while the Tigers begin their season 0-2.

Emory belted out 14 hits en route to 11 runs in the opener of the twin bill, winning by an 11-1 margin. In the second game, the Eagles erased a 7-1 deficit with a seven-run fourth inning and later rallied from being down 9-8 to complete the Saturday sweep, 12-9.

Junior Caleb Shulman drove in a team-high six runs across the two games, finishing the afternoon 4-for-8 at the dish. Senior Richard Brereton went 6-for-10, collecting four RBI and three runs scored. Junior Michael Edelman added five hits, going 5-for-8 with three RBI, four runs scored and two stolen bases.

Sophomore Jack Brodsky led the Eagles on the mound in the opener, recording a career-high seven strikeouts in 6.1 innings, allowing one run on eight hits as he earned his first win of the year. In game two, sophomore Dylan Kahn tossed a scoreless 1.1 inning of relief as he collected the first win while wearing an Emory uniform while freshman Aaron Mishoulam pitched a perfect 2.1 innings to go along with three strikeouts, recording his first career save.

Game 1 – Emory 11, DePauw 1

Two big innings were the deciding factor with Emory plating five runs in the fourth before scoring another four runs in the sixth.

Brereton and freshman Jack Masonis each had RBI singles to lead off the scoring before Shulman came through with a two-run single to make it 5-0.

In the sixth, the first five batters reached base safely in the four-run frame with Brereton driving home Edelman and senior Ryan Adelman with a triple to right field. Shulman had another two-run single to make it 9-0 as he brought home sophomore Zeke Diamond and Brereton with a single up the middle.

Brodsky tossed six scoreless frames in the outing before seeing his scoreless streak come to an end in the seven. Brodsky had pitched 11.1 scoreless frames to open his 2020 season.

The Eagles saw two more came across for the finishing touches in the eighth with junior Jake Kessinger doubling down the left field line to score Adelman before junior Drew Bartholow pushed home Kessinger with a sac fly.

Game 2 – Emory 12, DePauw 9

The Emory offense stayed red-hot, scoring in double digits for the third time in four games with 12 runs on 12 hits, erasing two DePauw leads to win their fourth game in a row.

The Tigers were the early aggressor in game two, jumping out to an early 7-1 edge and chasing starting James Robertson from the game.

After DePauw plated five runs in the away half of the fourth, the Eagles responded with seven in the half of the inning. Senior David Shore began the scoring with a two-run double before Edelman followed suit with a two run double of his own. A run scoring single by Bartholow made it a 7-6 ball game before back-to-back balls put in play by Shulman and Adelman helped Emory take the lead at 8-7. The first lead was short-lived as DePauw answered with two in the fifth to make it 9-8.

Emory did not go quietly, responding again with a two spot in the sixth as Shulman brought home the tying and go-ahead runs in the form of Brereton and junior Bartholow. The Eagles added two insurance runs in the seventh with Edelman picking up another RBI as he brought home junior Jacob Singer with a single to left. Later in the frame, junior Jack Rubenstein scampered home with the team's 12th run on a wild pitch.

After surrendering all nine runs between the third and fourth innings, the relief corps of sophomore Kahn, junior Henry Dimlow and Mishoulman did their job, holding the Tigers off the scoreboard over the final four innings of the game.

The Eagles continue their homestand Wednesday afternoon when Piedmont College visits Chappell Park in Atlanta in a 2:00 PM first pitch.
