Moore & Robertson Silence Mary Washington as Emory Baseball Completes Series Sweep

Junior Jack Moore and senior James Robertson quieted the Mary Washington bats while the Emory offense cranked out another 27 runs as the EU baseball team completed the sweep of the University of Mary Washington Saturday afternoon at Chappell Park in Atlanta.

Moore and Robertson surrendered a single run in a combined 14 innings on the mound, striking out a total of 13 batters compared to no walks as both hurlers recorded wins.

Offensively, the Emory Eagles continued to rake, finishing the doubleheader with 27 runs on 26 hits and were aided by 16 walks. Senior Jacob Greene had a team-high five hits and five RBI across the twin bill. Emory, as a team, is now averaging 10.69 runs per game and 12.36 runs per game in wins.

Next up for the Eagles (11-2) is a Monday afternoon matinee against in-state for Berry College. First pitch from Chappell Park is slated for 1:00 PM.

Game 1 – Emory 11, Mary Washington 1 (7 innings)

Moore was fully in command in the first game of the afternoon as he earned his first win of the 2020 season. The Peachtree City, GA native went the distance, allowing a single run on three hits in seven innings of work, striking out six and not walking a hitter. Moore took a no hitter into the fourth inning and faced only the minimum three batters in four of his seven frames.

The Eagles plated all 11 runs of their runs in two innings of work, scoring three times in the third before busting the game open in the fifth with an eight spot.

Greene had a game-high three hits and was one of five batters to record multi-hit performances. Senior Ryan Adelman and junior Michael Edelman each had two hits in the win and drove in a pair.

Game 2 – Emory 16, Mary Washington 0

The offense stayed humming, scoring in six of their eight turns at the plate while also batting around the order in back-to-back frames in the sixth and seventh. It is the seventh time this year Emory has reached double digits in runs scored and fourth time it has crossed the 15-run barrier.

Seven different hitters had at least one RBI with junior Caleb Shulman pacing the club with three RBI in a 1-for-2 effort. Greene had another multi-RBI output, driving in two as he went 2-for-6, while freshman Jack Masonis and junior Zack Atlas each had two RBI out of the eight hole in the lineup.

Robertson was superb in his seven innings of work, pitching seven scoreless frames and facing four batters over the minimum. He struck out a season-high seven batters and did not issue a free pass to improve to 2-1. He retired 16 of the final 18 batters he faced and needed just 73 pitches to complete the appearance.

Greene and sophomore Kyle Sulkowski each tossed scoreless innings in relief to help Emory turn in its second shutout of the campaign. Sulkowski allowed one hit in the eighth but erased that blemish with a double play to the next batter. In the ninth, Greene faced four hitters and struck out two to close out the game.
