Emory Baseball 2020 Season Recap

Emory Baseball 2020 Season Recap

A promising start to the 2020 campaign abruptly came to an end in the second week of March due to the global COVID-19 pandemic. The Eagles were off to an 11-4 record through the first 15 games before they saw the remaining slate of games cancelled.

Head Coach Mike Twardoski's squad was in the middle an impressive offensive run, averaging 9.5 runs per game. The team scored at least seven runs in all 11 wins and finished seventh in the nation with 143 total runs scored. In addition, the Eagles were third among all Division III teams with 55 stolen bases and were 24th in scoring average.

After beginning the year among the unranked, Emory's hot start helped the team crack the D3Baseball.com national rankings in the third edition of the top-25. The Eagles remained ranked for three weeks, ultimately finishing as the nation's 24th-best team in the final version of the publication's national rankings.

Five players were honored at the conclusion of the season by being recognized to the University Athletic Association All-Association Team: senior Jacob Greene, juniors Michael Edelman, Jack Rubenstein, Caleb Shulman and sophomore Jack Brodsky.

Rubenstein led the four field position players with his second career All-UAA selection while Greene, Edelman and Shulman earned their first All-UAA honor of their careers.

Shulman topped the squad in average (.404), hits (21), doubles (6) and fielding percentage (1.000). He recorded at least one hit in 12 of his 15 games played and paced the team with eight multi-hit performances. Greene posted a .388 batting average and paced the Eagles with two home runs and 18 RBI in 14 games while ranking 45th nationally in RBIs and was tabbed to the D3Baseball.com National Team of the Week on March 3rd.

Edelman was one of three Eagles to start all 15 games, finishing as the team leader in runs scored, doubles (6), walks (11) and stolen bases (9). His 21 runs placed him 12th among Division III leaders while his nine thefts on the bases put him 35th among the nation's best. Rubenstein registered a .380 average in 15 games (14 starts) with two doubles, one triple, seven RBI and eight stolen bases. His .475 on-base percentage led all Eagles with at least 10 games played while his six hit-by-pitches (27th in DIII) helped him move into sole possession of first place on the Emory all-time career list.

The Eagles collectively hit at a .315 clip to go along with a .429 slugging percentage and a .426 on-base percentage, the second highest single-season mark in program history.

Brodsky led the Eagles' pitching staff during his second season, making four starts while striking out 28 batters in 24 innings and going 3-0 with a 3.75 earned run average. His three victories placed him 16th among Division III leaders.

Following Brodsky, seniors Richard Brereton and James Robertson tallied two victories on the mound while freshman Aaron Mishoulam quickly emerged as the top option out of the pen, converting two save opportunities to go with a 1-1 record, 3.18 ERA and 11 strikeouts in a team-leading seven appearances.
