Baseball Extends Win Streak to Five; Sweeps Saturday DH at WashU

The Emory University baseball team pushed its winning streak to a season-best five games Saturday afternoon, taking the first two games of the series from WashU at Kelly Field in St. Louis, MO.

A long afternoon at the ballpark culminated with two wins for the Eagles, defeating the Bears 11-5 in the opener before an 11-6 victory in the night cap as the game was called for darkness in the top of the ninth inning.

Emory, now winners of five straight against UAA competition, improves to 19-12 overall and 6-4 in UAA play. WashU, on the losing end of three in a row now, falls to 9-13 on the year and 1-5 in the UAA.

The two teams will conclude the four-game set Sunday with two seven-inning contests, with the first beginning at 11:00 AM EST.

Game 1 – Emory 11, WashU 5

Thanks to the benefit of seven extra base hits including three home runs, the Eagles earned their first-ever victory against the Bears in St. Louis, having entered play 0-8 in games played on WashU's campus.

Senior Robby Wacker and juniors Ellis Schwartz and Jack Masonis smacked home runs for the Eagles while reigning UAA Hitter of the Week Tyler McLoughlin collected a game-high three hits with a pair of doubles.

Seven of the nine Emory starters drove in a run with Masonis leading the charge with three RBI with Wacker and sophomore Steven Hunt each driving in two.

Senior Jack Moore remained unbeaten on the mound, running his season record to 6-0 as he pitched into the sixth inning, allowing five runs (2 ER) on five hits, six walks but struck out five.

The Eagles jumped out to a 6-1 advantage through the game's first four innings, with the team putting up a four spot in the second inning.

The Bears cut the deficit to 6-4 and 7-5 with runs in the fifth and sixth frames but a three-run seventh headlined by homers from Schwartz and Wacker provided enough run support for the Emory bullpen to close the deal.

Sophomore Derek Livingston and senior Kyle Sulkowski combined for 3.2 scoreless innings to nail down the win, totaling five strikeouts compared to four base runners allowed.

Game 2 – Emory 11, WashU 6 (8 innings)

The Eagles occupied the basepaths early and often in the second game of the doubleheader, racking up 11 runs on 13 hits and 12 walks to sweep the afternoon. Emory recorded runs in six of the eight completed innings with seven runs coming in the sixth inning or later.

Masonis continued his strong day at the plate, driving in two more runs as he went 3-for-5 in the game. McLoughlin brought home a team-best three runs while Wacker had another well-rounded contest, drawing four walks, picking up two more RBI and scoring four times to bring his day's total to seven runs scored.

Senior Dylan Kahn secured the win on the mound, spinning two scoreless innings in relief. He retired six of the seven batters he faced to go along with two strikeouts.

The Eagles picked up right where they left off, scoring in each of the game's opening three frames to head into the fourth with a 4-0 lead.

The fourth was a trouble spot for Emory as WashU scored five runs, all coming with two outs, to reclaim a 5-4 lead and chased starter Joey Bock from the game.

However, the deficit was short-lived as the Eagles answered with three runs in the sixth. McLoughlin tied the ballgame with a single to right before Masonis and Josh Katz put the Eagles ahead for good with RBI singles.

Masonis and Wacker padded the Eagles lead in the game's final two full innings, plating four runs across the seventh and eighth.
