Emory Baseball Sees Win Streak Halted by #3 Birmingham-Southern

The Emory University baseball team saw its seven-game winning streak come to an end Tuesday evening, falling at home to No. 3 ranked Birmingham-Southern College by a score of 8-7.

Senior Robby Wacker and freshman Jack Halloran combined for seven of the team's 12 hits with Wacker going a perfect 4-for-4 and driving in five runs.

Junior Jack Masonis started the scoring with a leadoff home run in the bottom of the first as Emory scored in each of the game's first three innings to claim an early 3-0 edge.

The Panthers seized the momentum in the middle innings however, plating eight unanswered runs to move in front 8-3. BSC, which entered the game second in the nation in home runs, used the long ball to get back in the game. A two-run shot in the fourth cut the game to 3-2 before a five-run fifth inning headlined by an opposite field grand slam by Ian Hancock pushed Birmingham-Southern ahead.

After being held off the scoreboard for four frames, the Eagles got a run back in the bottom of the eighth with a run-scoring single off the bat of Wacker.

Emory continued to try for some late-inning magic with a two-out rally in the ninth as a hit-by-pitch and a bloop single from junior Ellis Schwartz and senior Zeke Diamond in consecutive at bats brought Wacker again to the plate. Wacker walloped his seventh home run off a 2-1 offering from BSC closer Davis Williams to bring the Eagles to within one. However, that was a close as they would get as Williams sent down Henry Pelinski on strikes in the following at bat to end the ball game.

The Eagles now turn their attention to the weekend as Brandeis University visits Atlanta for the final series of the regular season. Game one of the conference series is set for 3:00 PM Friday afternoon at Chappell Park in Atlanta.
