2022 Baseball Season Recap

2022 Baseball Season Recap

Returning to a full-fledged season after battling adversity the previous two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Emory University baseball team managed to reach the 25-win mark as they went 25-13 and captured a share of the University Athletic Association title for the first time since 2015.

Backed by a high-powered offense that averaged over eight runs per game, the Eagles scored 10 runs or more on 13 different occasions. The team belted 30 home runs, the fourth-most in a single season, while recording a .438 slugging percentage, the 10th-best single-season mark in team history.

Seniors Robby Wacker and Jack Moore highlighted the squad with ABCA All-Region recognition and were two of five players that garnered All-UAA acclaim. Wacker was a catalyst to the team's success at the plate, finishing as the team leader in runs scored, home runs, RBI, total bases, walks, slugging percentage and on-base percentage. On the mound, Moore asserted himself as the staff ace, going 6-0 in his 10 starts while leading the team in innings pitched and strikeouts.

Joining the duo as All-UAA performers were fellow seniors Zeke Diamond, Kyle Sukowski and junior Jack Masonis. Diamond paced the team in hits, batting average and runs scored with Masonis topping the team in triples while ranking second in both doubles and RBI and third in total hits. Sulkowski was the unsung hero out of the bullpen, turning in a dominating year in relief as he set a program record with his .152 opponent's batting average while collecting 14 scoreless appearances as he went 5-1 with three saves.

Furthermore, Head Coach Mike Twardoski and his staff of Bobby Perez and Sam Carpenter were named the league's Coaching Staff of the Year as the team went 12-4 during conference play, the most wins by an Emory squad since the UAA shifted to a 16-game schedule in 2017.

The season began with the Eagles winning four of their first five contests including a high watermark coming in the season opener where they beat in-state rival Berry College, 17-5, to give Coach Twardoski his 600th career win.

The Eagles dropped four of their next six to finish the first month of the season at 6-5. Emory regrouped in March, winning eight of 11 before falling in four straight against conference foes Case Western Reserve and New York University.

Sitting at 14-12 and 1-4 in UAA play, the tides turned in April as the Eagles caught fire and went on an impressive 11-1 run to close out the season with the lone defeat coming against No. 3 ranked Birmingham-Southern. Emory won 11 straight inside the conference including four-game sweeps at WashU and at home versus Brandeis, outscoring NYU, WashU and Brandeis 119-59 across those 11 games.

The Eagles made up three games in the UAA standings during the final stretch, culminating with earning a share of the conference title with CWRU as they took care of business against Brandeis, 19-10, in the season finale. Despite the torrid stretch to close out the year and a conference championship, it was not enough to catapult the team to the NCAA postseason as the Eagles were denied an at-large bid.
