Emory Baseball Sweeps Saturday Twinbill with NYU

The Emory University baseball team bounced back in a big way Saturday afternoon, sweeping both ends of doubleheader action over New York University in Atlanta.

The Eagles scored 11 runs over the final four innings in game one to pick up the 11-6 win in the opener before busting out with 15 runs in a mercy rule win in the second game of the afternoon.

Emory improves to 13-9 following the sweep and stands at 2-1 in UAA action through the first three games. The Violets fall to 8-7 after the two defeats and 1-2 inside conference action.

The two programs will conclude the UAA opening series on Sunday with the finale set to get underway from Chappell Park at 1:00 PM, weather permitting.

Game 1 – Emory 11, NYU 6

Sophomore Ryan Reynolds was the game one standout for the Eagles as he earned his third win of the season. The second-year right-hander carried a no hitter into the sixth inning and finished with a career-best eight innings pitched, the longest outing for any Emory starter this season. He saw his shutout bid end in the seventh as NYU struck for several late inning runs but Reynolds ended with five strikeouts compared to just one walk.

After scoring the game's first two runs via a balk and wild pitch in the fifth inning, the Eagles broke open the game in the sixth with four runs with the big blow coming by senior Walker Woolf who delivered a pinch hit, bases-clearing double to put the Eagles ahead by five.

NYU got two runs back in the visitor's seventh but Emory answered right back, first with another home run by junior Tyler McLoughlin followed by a sac fly from freshman Zach Wasserlauf.

A three-run home run cut the lead to three in the eighth but again, the Eagles made the threat short lived, scoring three more times in the home half of the inning with RBIs coming off the bats of senior Henry Pelinski and freshman Andrew Shlomm to put the score out of reach.

Sophomore Matthew Sicoli finished with a game-high three hits and reached base in all five plate appearances.

Game 2 – Emory 15, NYU 4 (7 Innings)

The Eagles cashed in with 15 runs on 18 hits in the second game of the day, pulling out the mercy rule win in seven innings.

Junior Jacob Grossman and freshman Adam Geller had big offensive outings, with both batters contributing three RBI efforts while also each tallying three hits. Ten different Eagles had at least one hit with six players notching two or more base knocks.

Freshman Josh Zuckerman garnered his second win of the campaign, working five frames and allowed two runs on six hits. He struck out six and did not issue a free pass.

Grossman and sophomore Josh Katz started the scoring in the second, driving in all three runs in the inning.

After NYU got a run back in the third, Emory opened the flood gates in the fourth as the team sent 13 batters to the plate in the seven-run inning. The first five batters reached base safely with Geller driving home the first two runs with a double before Grossman followed suite two batters later with a run-scoring double of his own.

The Eagles would tack on five more runs across the next two innings, moving in front 15-2 before eventually closing out with the 11-run win.
