Emory Golf Earns NCAA D-III Championships Berth

2018 NCAA D-III Men's Golf Championships Announcement

The No. 4-ranked Emory University golf team has been selected to compete in the 2018 NCAA Division III Golf Championships.  The Eagles are one of 42 squads vying for the team title that will be played May 15-18 at the Grandover Resort in Greensboro, North Carolina.  Serving as the hosts will be Guilford College and the Greensboro Sports Commission.

Emory received one of two Pool B bids, consisting of independent institutions, and institutions that are members of conferences that do not meet the requirements for automatic qualification.  A total of 33 conferences were awarded automatic nods while seven berths were reserved for Pool C - schools from automatic qualifying conferences that are not conference champs and any remaining Pool B teams.  In addition, six individuals from non-qualifying teams were chosen to participate bringing the field to 216 players.

The 72-hole Championships will be played both on the 7,150-yard, par-72 East Course and the 6,780-yard, par-72 West Courses. After a 36-hole cut that slices the field to 18 teams and top six individuals not on one of those teams, the final two rounds will be conducted on the East Course

Emory will be making its 21st overall in the 33-year history of the program and the fifth during the seven-year tenure of head coach John Sjoberg.

All of the top 18 and 20 of the 25 top-ranked teams that comprised the most recent Bushnell Golfweek Top 25 Coaches Poll will be in the hunt for this year's national crown.  Methodist College holds down the No. 1 spot in the Poll while Huntingdon College stands in the No. 2 spot.  St. Thomas (MN) is one spot ahead of Emory with UT-Tyler rounding out the top five.

The Eagles concluded last year's Championships tied for 12th place.

Wittenberg enters this year's Championships looking to defend its title after posting a two-shot advantage over runner-up Guilford.
