2021-22 Men's Golf Season Recap

2021-22 Men's Golf Season Recap

A stellar season for the 2021-22 Emory University men's golf team was highlighted by the play of three seniors and two newcomers on the way to a fifth place finish at the NCAA Championship.

After the men's golf team, led by Head Coach John Sjoberg, spent the bulk of the year as the No. 1 ranked team in the country they entered into the NCAA Championships where they finished in fifth place, the team's best result since 2013. That's not where the Eagles accomplishments stopped as the entire season was one for the history books filled with many team and individual accolades.

The Eagles came into the season as the sixth ranked team in the nation and opened up play at the DIII Fall Preview where they registered a second place finish amongst some of the top competition in the nation. The team would go on to notch another second place finish at the Wabash Invitational in October before going on a scorching hot streak to close out the fall season.

The Eagles would begin their streak at the Tartan Invitational where Emory would record a two-stroke victory over conference foe Carnegie Mellon to win their first tournament of the year. The following weekend the Eagles recorded a dominant tournament victory defeating every team in the field by at least 13 strokes at the Golfweek Invitational and in doing so set the team record for the best three-round tournament score in program history. Emory would round out it's fall season hot streak at the Chick-fil-A Invitational where they recorded their third consecutive tournament win in the month of October with a nine-stroke victory over the field.

The spring season proved to be a little tougher for the Eagles opening with a seventh place finish at the Savannah Collegiate. The opening bump in the road proved to be no trouble for Emory as the following weekend they would compete at the UAA Championships where they recorded their fifth consecutive conference championship with a narrow 3-2 match play victory over NYU. A third place finish and two sixth place finishes at the next three tournaments saw the Eagles head into their home tournament looking for their second team victory of the spring season. Emory put together one of their most dominant performances of the year winning the Emory Invitational by 25 strokes in their last regular season tournament before the NCAA Championships.

The four-day NCAA Championship was a roller coaster ride as the Eagles were as high as fourth at points and as low as seventh in the standings but ultimately finished out their season in fifth thanks to some spectacular individual performances. This season for the Emory men's golf team was one of the most decorated in program history and included a Jack Nicklaus Award Finalist, four All-American nods, four All-UAA members, eight UAA Athlete of the Week honors and a number of program records.

Sophomore Jackson Klutznick was the breakout star for the Eagles in his first year with the program. After setting the program record with an average of 70.7 strokes per round, Klutznick was named one of five finalists for the Jack Nicklaus Award which is presented to the national player of the year each season. On top of that Klutznick was named to the PING All-American first team becoming just the fifth Eagle in program history to earn that distinction. In conference play, Klutznick earned a spot on the All-UAA First Team and became the inaugural recipient of the Sophomore Rookie of the Year Award for the UAA. Despite only playing in six tournaments for the Eagles, Klutznick set a number of program records including the new single round record when he shot a 64 during the second round of the Golfweek Invitational. Klutznick won two tournaments as an individual, Chick-fil-A Invitational and the Emory Invitational, and led the team in scoring in five of the six tournaments he competed in. Klutznick was instrumental in Emory's fifth place finish at the NCAA Championships as he tied for the team lead after posting a four-round score of 298.

Senior Logan Ryan was one of the four Eagles named to an All-American team as he earned a spot on the All-American Second Team. This marked Ryan's third season earning an All-American nod and joins his senior season award cabinet along with All-UAA First Team and All-Region. After averaging 73 strokes a round over the course of 27 rounds, Ryan finishes his career with the third best scoring average in program history at 73.19 strokes per round. Ryan stepped up to the plate in the two biggest moments of the season for the Eagles: winning at the one spot at the UAA Championships to help the Eagles secure the conference crown and he tied for the best score on the Eagles at the NCAA Championships.

Senior Max Schwarz, along with Ryan, was the second member of the Eagles to earn their third ever All-American nod as he was named to the All-American third team for his efforts this season. Also named All-Region and to the All-UAA First Team, Schwarz averaged an impressive 72.9 strokes per round this season to become the all-time leader in strokes per round in program history with a 72.95 average. Schwarz earned two UAA Athlete of the Week awards for his performances at the DIII Fall Preview and Tartan Invitational. Finishing with a 72-hole total of 300 at the NCAA Championship, Schwarz finished just two strokes off the team lead and tied for 32nd overall.

Freshman Tony Li in his first year with the team earned an All-American honorable mention nod to become the first freshman since teammate Ryan in 2019 to earn an All-American honor. In his freshman season, Li became the third ever Eagle to earn the UAA Rookie of the Year Award to go along with an All-Region nod and a spot on the All-UAA Second Team. Li averaged 73.1 strokes per round in his 20 rounds played, the best mark by a freshman in program history. Li was instrumental in helping to defeat NYU in the UAA Championship winning his match 4&3 in the two spot. Li finished in 37th at the NCAA Championship after recording a 14-over par, 301 over the course of 72 holes.

The Emory men's golf team also succeeded in the classroom placing six of its student-athletes on the Spring UAA All-Academic Team. Highlighting that list was Schwarz who was also named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District Team for his performance on the greens and in the classroom.
