Emory Men's Basketball Continues Overseas Trip

Emory Men's Basketball Continues Overseas Trip

Location: Dublin, Ireland
Date: August 13th, 2011
Time: 10:37 PM

The day started off with a fantastic tour of St. Patrick’s Cathedral in downtown Dublin. The mixture of architecture and the near removal of assistant coach Christopher Murphy from the church due to trespassing made it a one-of-a-kind experience. After the tour we enjoyed a lengthy sightseeing ride around Dublin on our tour bus and then it was back to the hotel for the usual pregame doings. We tipped off at 7:30 local time, almost 2:30 to you lads in the states. The Eagles' first international victory was on the line; however, to our surprise the opposition, the Dublin Thunder, proved to be a much more formidable foe than anticipated.

The game was a back and forth battle, with Emory continuing its tendency in pushing the ball with a ferocious pace, and doing what we do best -- scoring.  As Emory ran the ball, the Thunder used their big advantage inside to batter and bruise the Eagles bigs. Missing three posts due to an assortment of injuries the responsibility to play big was left in the hands of rising juniors Michael Friedberg and Ryan Peters. Nevertheless, Friedberg soon found himself sitting out the majority of the first half with three unnecessary fouls. As a result Coach Zimmerman was forced to go small inside and with the help of shooting guards Justin Resnick and Alex Greven, the Eagles managed to miraculously hold the low post until Friedberg reentered. Trailing only twice the Eagles kept the ball moving and in the end, even with foul trouble, Emory was able to hold on for a 91-85 victory to secure that first international win. C’mon!

Team morale is steadily increasing as stories of the previous night are being passed around on the bus ride back from one of the greatest sporting spectacles of Eastern Europe. Who knew Gaelic sports could be so entertaining? For those of you who are unfamiliar with the sport of “Hurling,” simply, it is a combination of soccer, lacrosse, baseball and rugby. It just so happened the Eagles day off was the same day the national hurling semifinals were held and to say we were fortunate enough to be able to attend the event would be an understatement. The Dublin team ended up falling to the heavy favorites from Tipperary in an incredibly exciting down-to-the-wire match. Our second of four games is tomorrow in Belfast and as it is now time for dinner this blog has reached its end, until tomorrow, cheers and gudday!
