Emory Men's Basketball Wins At Brandeis - Pushes Win Streak To 10 Games

Senior Christopher Avant led four double-figure scorers with 17 points in helping the Emory men's basketball team to a Sunday afternoon win at Brandeis University.  The No. 17 Eagles captured their 10th straight game and raised their overall record to 14-2 (5-0 University Athletic Association) following a 90-57 decision over the Judges who fell to 4-12 overall (0-5 UAA).

Emory led from start to finish as it raised its road/neutral record to 5-2.  The Eagles ended the game shooting 53.8 percent (35-65) from the floor, the fifth time this year it connected on 50 percent or better of its attempts, while the Judges finished at 41.3 percent.  Avant's effort represented his 11th double-figure outing and second-highest point total of the year.  Emory converted 38.7 percent (12-31) from three-point range compared to BU's 30 percent (6-20).  The Eagles came up with a season-high 14 steals and finished with a 27-13 advantage in the points-off-turnover category.  Senior Whit Rapp dished out 10 assists, his second double-figure total of the season.

Freshmen Romin Williams and Matt Davet each rang up 14 points, with Williams scoring nine in the second half and ending the game five-10 from the floor, including four-of-eight from three-point range, while Davet, closed out the day successful on six field goals in 10 attempts, including a pair of triples.  Junior Beau Bommarito picked up 13 points, all of which came during the first half, and ended up five-of-nine from the floor while adding three three-pointers in six tries.

Emory's offense was in high gear during the opening 20 minutes of action, shooting 60 percent (18-30) from the floor, including 46.7 percent (7-15) from beyond the arc, in claiming a 49-31 edge at the break.  The Eagles put three players in double figures in the stanza, with Christopher Avant and Bommarito each posting 13 points while freshman Matt Davett chipped in 10 points.  An early 16-3 Emory run that saw Williams score five points and Bommarito knock down a triple, put it ahead by a 22-8 count with 9:03 left in the stanza.  The Eagles used five straight points by Chris Avant to maintain a 14-point cushion, 29-15, with just under seven minutes left.  After the Judges' Eric D'Aguanno sank a three-pointer to draw the hosts to within 10, the Eagles rattled off a 9-0 blitz, started by a Davet trey and followed by back-to-back triples by Bommarito, to post a 45-26 lead with 1:49 on the clock.  Bommarito sank five-of-seven from the field, including three three-pointers in five attempts in the first half while Avant was successful on four-of-five from the floor.

In the second half, Brandeis got to within 15 points with 14:42 remaining, but the Eagles stymied any comeback bid with a 10-2 spurt, which saw Williams knock down a pair of three pointers, to go ahead by a 67-44 margin with 11:20 on the clock.  The Eagles would extend their cushion to 81-51 with 5:00 remaining following an 8-1 burst that saw senior Donald Avant account for six of his eight points.

Emory returns to action on Friday (Jan. 26) when it hosts the University of Chicago in an 8:00 pm start.
