Emory Men's Basketball Advances to NCAA Second Round with 91-72 Win over Berry

Freshman Romin Williams was one of four double-digit scorers for the Emory University Men's Basketball team Friday night, scoring a game-high 25 points to lead the Eagles to a 91-72 opening round victory over Berry College inside the Woodruff PE Center in Atlanta.

Emory advances to the second round of the NCAA Division III tournament for the sixth straight season and will face LeTourneau University Saturday night with tip-off scheduled for 7:00 PM at the WoodPEC. LETU were 85-77 winners over Hanover College earlier on Friday evening.

Williams netted his 25 points on 8-of-16 shooting including 4-of-6 from downtown and added three assists and two rebounds. Senior Christopher Avant scored 16 points and grabbed a team-high six rebounds while classmate Whit Rapp poured in 14 points and dished out eight assists to eclipse the 600 mark in his career. Junior Gebereal Baitey added 12 points to round out the Emory double-digit point scorers.

For the visiting Vikings, Caleb Johnson led all players with 15 points with Alton McCloud and Elijah Hirsh chipping in with 13 points apiece. Hirsh corralled a game-high 10 rebounds for the double-double and Miles Moore handed out five assists to lead the team.

Emory led by just six points at the break, 39-33, and found itself trailing Berry for the first time all game at 54-53 with 14:20 remaining in the second half before utilizing a 32-10 run to gain a 85-64 advantage with 2:53 to go in the contest. The Eagles' lead grew to as many as 22 points at 91-69 in the closing seconds before settling on the 91-72 final margin.
