Second-Half Surge Seals Win For Emory Men's Basketball Over Staten Island

Sophomore Matt Davet scored 14 of his game-high 24 points in the second half, sparking a strong effort over the final 20 minutes of play by the Emory men's basketball team in a Friday evening win over the College of Staten Island at the Dick Leftwich Tip-Off Tournament hosted by Roanoke College.  The Eagles raised their record to 2-0 following an 86-68 decision over the Dolphins who slipped to 0-3.

Davet finished the evening eight-of-16 from the floor, including four-of-eight from three-point range, while sinking four free throws in recording his second straight 20-point plus performance.  In addition to his offensive production Davet paced all players with a career-high 15 rebounds which enabled him to chalk up his first career double-double.  Sophomore Lawrence Rowley tallied 16 points while sophomore Romin Williams and senior Gebereal Baitey rounded out the squad's double-figure scorers with 13 and 12 points, respectively.

After the Eagles led by a 31-27 count at halftime, CSI stayed within striking distance and knotted the score at 44-44 before a triple by Davet with 13:38 remaining broke the tie.  After the Dolphins made one-of-two from the stripe,  the Eagles ran off a 14-4 blitz over a two-minute stretch, highlighted by a pair of treys by Williams and one by Baitey, to bolt to a 61-49 margin with 11:08 on the clock. After a triple by CSI's Adeola Latunji cut Emory's lead to nine points, Davet accounted for the first six points of a decisive 10-2 run that stretch Emory's margin to 71-54 with 6:50 on the clock.

Emory closed out the game shooting 41.2 percent (28-of-68) from the floor, 53.3 percent (16-of-30) over the final 20 minutes of action that aided in a 55-41 scoring advantage.  Staten Island converted 37.5 percent (27-of-72) of its field goal tries, including just 26.3 percent (5-of-19) from distance.  The Eagles finished with a 46-43 edge in rebounding and were deadly from the charity stripe, sinking 19-of-21 opportunities.

Emory will play Keuka College on in the championship game of the Leftwich Tip-Off Tournament on Saturday starting at 3:00 p.m.
