Sophomore Matt Schner paced three double-figure scorers in leading the Emory men's basketball team to a hard-fought Sunday afternoon win at New York University.  The Eagles won for the sixth straight time and upped their overall record to 16-4, 7-2 in the University Athletic Association, following a 75-67 triumph over the Violets who fell to 6-14 in overall action, 0-9 in the league.  The victory allowed Emory to maintain a share of first in the conference with Washington University.

Schner knocked down eight-of-11 field goal attempts, including his lone three-point try, in registering his 14^th double-figure scoring performance of the season.  Sophomore Nick Stuck chipped in 14 points, going four-of-eight from the field and six-of-six from the charity stripe, while senior Gebereal Baitey rounded out the double-digit scorers with 13 points.

After a Schner three-pointer with 15:27 remaining in the game gave Emory a 47-34 lead, the Eagles went scoreless for the next 4:45 while the Violets totaled six points that cut their deficit to seven points.  A pair of makes at the foul line by Stuck boosted Emory to a 51-42 edge, but a 9-2 NYU spurt, placed the host to within two points with 8:09 left. After two more free throws by Stuck, a bucket by Baitey pushed Emory to a six-point advantage, but the Violets stayed within striking distance and trailed by a three-point margin with 5:03 on the clock. Sophomore Romin Williams then scored six straight points in a 90-second stretch and Schner added a bucket as part of an 8-1 Emory run that extended it to a 10-point cushion with 2:04 left.  Back-to-back three-point plays by NYU kept its hopes alive with 46 ticks on the clock, but the Eagles' kept the Violets at bay by hitting their final six attempts from the foul line.

Emory ended the day shooting 44.1 percent (26-of-59) from the field compared to NYU's mark of 38.8 percent (26-of-67).  While the Eagles were successful on just four three-pointers in 22 opportunities, they were exceptional at the foul line hitting 19-of-20, including all six over the final 41 seconds of the contest.  Emory finished with a 42-38 edge in rebounding with Schner leading the team in that category with 10 caroms which represented his second double-double of the season.

The trio of Schner (8 pts.), Lawrence Rowley (7 pts.) and Matt Davet (6 pts.) accounted for 21 first-half points in helping the Eagles to a 40-24 edge at halftime.  Emory connected of 48.5 percent (16-of-33) of its field goal attempts during the opening 20 minutes of action compared to the Violets effort of 23.7 percent (9-of-38).  An early 9-0 Emory spurt, which saw Davet score four points, snapped a tie and gave the Eagles a 13-4 margin with 11:50 left in the half.  After NYU fought back to within a 15-13 count, the Eagles responded with three-pointers from Baitey and Williams, followed by a Schner bucket, to claim a 23-13 edge with 7:41 left in the stanza.  A bucket by NYU's Bobby Hawkinson narrowed the Emory cushion to six points, but the Eagles closed out the final 3:24 of the half on an 11-1 spree, capped a triple by sophomore Clay Washburn with 1:42 on the clock that closed out the scoring for the half.

Emory returns to action next Friday (Feb. 8) when it hosts Washington University in an 8:00 pm tip.
