2019-20 Emory Men's Basketball Schedule


The Emory men's basketball team has released its 2019-20 schedule.  A traditional 25-game slate, the Eagles' campaign features 13 home games, six against non-conference foes and the usual seven University Athletic Association opponents.

"The 2019-20 schedule will challenge us to play our best basketball to be successful," stated head coach Jason Zimmerman.  "We are excited about the journey that lies ahead and look forward to the competition and the opportunity to improve."

Emory faces an impressive array of non-conference tilts, with eight of the 10 teams on the docket coming off winning seasons a year ago including four that advanced to the NCAA D-III Tournament. 

The first three opponents that the Eagles will square off against combined for 65 victories during the 2018-19 campaign, including a season-opening test on Nov. 9 at perennial power Guilford College of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. The Quakers of Head Coach Tom Palumbo advanced to the Round of Eight in last year's postseason, finishing with an overall record of 24-8 and a No. 13 national ranking by D3hoops.com. Emory stays on the road for a Dec. 12 contest vs. Berry College of the Southern Athletic Association (SAA).  The Vikings turned in a solid effort of 19-7 last season.  Emory makes its home debut on Nov. 20 when it entertains the University of the South, winners of the SAA Tournament Championship and NCAA Tournament participant last season. The Tigers posted a 22-7 won-lost ledger during 2018-19, and will be guided by first-year Head Coach Brian Emerson. The Eagles then welcome Oglethorpe (Nov. 23) and Covenant College (Nov. 26) to the Woodruff PE Center on the Emory campus with those programs turning in records of 14-13 and 18-9, respectively, from last year. Next up for the Eagles will be a three-game road swing, starting with a pair of contests at the Maryville College Thanksgiving Classic (Nov. 30-Dec. 1).  Emory will match-up against Pfeiffer College from the USA South Athletic Conference on the first day of play before taking on the host Scots and their new head coach, Raul Placeres, in the finale.  The Scots captured the USA South title last season, earning a NCAA Tournament bid in the process, while finishing with a 21-8 ledger.  Following the Thanksgiving Classic, Emory will venture down I-85 for a Dec. 4 affair at LaGrange College, followed by a Dec. 7 home outing against Piedmont College. Coming out of the holidays, the Eagles will host a talent-packed Emory Holiday Classic, Dec. 29-30. Emory's first-day foe will be defending NCAA D-III champion UW-Oshkosh, who defeated Swarthmore in the title contest to end the year at 28-3.  The following day, Emory will meet Guilford for the second time during the year.

The gauntlet that is the University Athletic Association begins on Jan. 11 when the University of Rochester invades Atlanta.  The Yellowjackets of Head Coach Luke Flockerzi fashioned an overall mark of 21-6 while gaining an at-large nod to the NCAA Tournament. Rochester finished second in the league last year to Emory with a conference effort of 10-4.  Emory will play four of its next six conference contests on foreign courts with its home weekend against Carnegie Mellon (Jan. 24) and Case Western Reserve (Jan. 26) sandwiched around road trips to New York University (Jan. 17) and Brandeis (Jan. 19) and Chicago (Jan. 31) and Washington University (Feb. 2).  The Eagles start the second half of conference action with four straight home games, starting the weekend of Feb.7 & 9 when the Maroons of UC and the Bears of Wash U come to town.  Emory will wrap up the home portion of the regular-season schedule when tangles with NYU (Feb. 14) and Brandeis (Feb. 16).  The weekend of Feb. 21 & 23, will see Emory travel to Carnegie Mellon and Case Western, followed by a Feb. 29 test at Rochester.

Emory recorded an overall record of 20-6 last season and won its third UAA crown in five years with a mark of 11-3.  The Eagles earned their seventh straight trip to the NCAA Tournament, tying the UAA record for most consecutive postseason berths by a member institution.
