No. 6 Emory Men's Basketball Races By Sewanee

Junior Romin Williams scored 19 of his game-high 22 points in the first half in leading the Emory men's basketball team to a Wednesday victory over the University of the South.  The Eagles raised the program's all-time record in home-opening games to 29-5 and season slate to 3-0 following a 94-70 over the Tigers who slipped to 3-2.

Williams capped off the night sinking eight-of-17 from the floor, including a pair of three-pointers, and all four of his attempts from the charity stripe in notching his second 20-plus point contest of the young season.  He had plenty of help in the scoring department as four teammates tallied 10 or more points, including junior Matt Davet who finished with 18 points on six-of-13 shooting from the floor including four-of-seven from distance. Juniors Lawrence Rowley and Matt Schner each contributed a dozen points, with Rowley grabbing a game-high nine boards and Schner dishing out five assists, while classmate Nick Stuck added 10 points.

The story of the game was told over the final 12:43 of the first half as Emory blitzed Sewanee with a devastating 42-12 run to take an insurmountable 54-25 advantage into the locker room at the break.  A 14-0 run began the onslaught with Williams and junior Clay Washburn each scoring five points in that stretch.  After a bucket by the Tigers' Joey Knox, the Eagles rattled off 10 unanswered points, ignited by a four-play play by Davet, to claim a 36-15 advantage.   Ahead by a 16-point count, Williams scored the first five of a 7-0 burst that extended Emory's margin to 43-20 with 3:32 remaining in the stanza. From there, Emory scored 11 of the game's next 16 points, including a triple by Williams at the buzzer, to close out the scoring.  Williams converted seven of his 11 field goal tries during the opening 20 minutes while Davet picked up 11 points, hitting three treys in the process.

For the game, Emory posted a 42.7 percent (35-of-83) mark from the floor while the Tigers were a bit higher at 42.9 percent (27-of-63).  The Eagles were relentless on the boards, owning a decisive 53-30 bulge in rebounding, 21-6 on the offensive end of the floor that helped generate a 25-3 edge in second-chance points. Helping the offensive effort was Emory taking solid care of the ball with just five turnovers.

By the time the final horn had sounded 10 of the 13 Emory players who saw action found their way into the scoring column while 11 had rebounds to their names.

Emory returns to action on Saturday (Nov. 23) when it hosts crosstown foe Oglethorpe in a 4:00 p.m. tip.
