Emory Men's Basketball Earns Road Win At NYU

Junior Romin Williams led four double-figure scorers with a game-high 25 points in sparking the Emory men's basketball team to a Friday evening road win at New York University. The No. 3-ranked Eagles raised their overall record to 12-1, 2-0 in the University Athletic Association following an 83-69 decision over the Violets who fell to 7-6 overall, 0-2 in the league.

Williams ended the night nine-of-16 from the field, including five-of-10 from three-point range, and made both of his free throw attempts in registering his seventh performance of 20 or more points this year.  His five triples represented the ninth time during the 2019-20 campaign that he drained three or more from beyond the arc.  Junior Matt Schner contributed 17 points to the cause, his 12th double-digit performance this year, connecting on six-of-nine from the floor and four-of-six from distance.  Luke Morrison and freshman Greg Lawrence each came off the bench to score 10 points with Morrison knocking down four field goals in five opportunities and two treys.  The Eagle reserves prodcued 29 points, the high-water mark by the Emory bench this year.  Junior guard Nick Stuck doled out six assists.

With Williams scoring five points and Schner four, Emory opened the second half on a 9-0 blitz that stretched a five-point lead at halftime into a 53-39 bulge with 17:14 left in the game. However, the Violets battled their way back into contention, scoring 14 unanswered points over a 3:57 stretch to knot the score at 53-53.  After the teams exchanged buckets, Emory took command of the contest with a lethal and lightning quick 17-0 barrage over a 4:20 frame, which saw it unleash four three-pointers, to roar to a 72-55 cushion with 7:55 on the clock.  Schner broke the deadlock and gave the Eagles the lead for good with the first triple while Williams knocked down a pair from downtown and Mason Johnson accounting for the final trey of the decisive stretch.  A Morrison three-pointer with 5:34 remaining gave the Eagles their biggest lead of the game at 79-60.

For the contest, Emory was successful on 52.5 percent (32-of-61) from the floor, the fourth time it had shot 50 percent or better, compared to NYU's mark of 38.5 percent (25-of-65).  Three-point shooting proved to be pivotal as the Eagles sank 12-of-27 while  NYU connected on just three of its 17 attempts.  The Violets did outrebound Emory by a 43-29 margin,  but turned the ball over on 18 occasions while led to 22 Emory points.

Emory returns to action on Sunday when it plays at Brandeis in a noon tip.
