Second-Half Surge Propels Emory Men's Basketball To Win Over Carnegie Mellon

Second-Half Surge Propels Emory Men's Basketball To Win Over Carnegie Mellon

Emory University juniors Romin Williams and Matt Davet each totaled 20 points in the leading the Emory men's basketball team to a Friday evening home win over Carnegie Mellon University.  The No. 8-ranked Eagles upped their overall record to 13-2, 3-1 in the University Athletic Association, following a 91-72 decision over the Tartans who fell to 8-7, 1-3 in the league.

Williams and Davet combined for 23 second-half points, helping the Eagles to a 41-21 scoring advantage over the final 20 minutes of action. The Eagles shot 46.9 percent (15-of-32) from the floor during the second stanza, holding the Tartans to just 23.3 percent (7-of-30).   Emory was successful on four triples in nine opportunities while CMU misfired on all seven of its attempts.  For Williams, it was the eighth time this season that he scored 20 or more points while Davet reached that mark for the third time, closing out the game by converting eight-of-11 from the floor, including four treys in seven tries.

After CMU's Trent Suddeth hit one-of-two charity tosses to draw the Tartans to within 74-66 with 8:08 remaining in the game, the Eagles rattled off a 17-6 run over the final 7:54 to seal the outcome.  The Eagles started the decisive stretch on a 7-0 spurt, keyed by five points from junior Matt Schner.  After a bucket by the visitors, Emory accounted for nine of the game's next 12 points, capped by a three-pointer by Davet, to post a 90-71 cushion with 2:13 on the clock.  The Tartans would score just three points over the final 5:53, missing their final 11 field goal attempts.

Williams and Davet had plenty of help on the offensive end of the floor as three additional Eagles racked up double-figure scoring.  Schner poured in 17 points, 11 in the second half, ending the night seven-of-nine from the field and two-of-two from the foul line.  Junior Nick Stuck and sophomore Mason Johnson totaled 13 and 11 points, respectively, with Stuck dishing out six assists and Johnson grabbing seven boards and blocking a pair of CMU shot attempts.

Emory held the edge in field goal shooting, hitting 48.6 percent (35-of-72) compared to CMU's 40 percent (28-of-70).  The Eagles finished with a 48-36 advantage in rebounding with junior Lawrence Rowley grabbing a squad-best 10 boards, his sixth double-figure effort of the season.  Rowley also tied his career high with five blocked shots, aiding the Eagles to a total of 11 for the night.

Emory, winners of seven of eight home dates, returns to action on Sunday (Jan. 26) when it plays host to Case Western Reserve in a noon tip.
