Balanced Attack Leads Emory Men's Basketball To Win vs. NYU

Juniors Matt Schner and Matt Davet each scored 16 points to lead the Emory men's basketball team to a Friday evening win at home over New York University.  The No. 9-ranked Eagles won for the sixth time in the past seven games and raised their overall record to 18-3, 8-2 in the University Athletic Association following a 99-81 decision over the Violets who fell to 8-13 overall, 1-9 in the league.

Schner and Davet headed up a balanced Emory attack that featured six double-figure scorers.  Junior Lawrence Rowley registered 14 points while classmate Nick Stuck and sophomore Mason Johnson chipped in 11 points apiece.  Romin Williams rounded out the group with 10 points.

Emory closed out the evening shooting 52.9 percent (37-of-70) from the floor, its seventh outing of the campaign of reaching or bettering the 50-percent plateau, while NYU was successful on 44.4 percent (28-of-63) of its opportunities.  The Eagles knocked down 10 three-pointers in 26 tries for a 38.5 percent effort and converted 78.9 percent (15-of-19) from the stripe.  Emory finished with a 41-31 edge in rebounding with Schner leading players with 11 boards, allowing him to notch his fifth double-double of the year.

Emory never trailed in the game as it won for the 10th time in 12 appearances at the Woodruff PE Center.  Holding an early 9-8 lead, the Eagles blitzed the visitors with a 15-2 burst, keyed by a pair of Davet triples and five points by Rowley, to claim a 24-10 lead with 12:22 left in the opening half.  Ahead by a 28-16 count, a bucket by Davet followed by a three-pointer by Williams extended the Eagles to a 33-16 cushion. Emory would eventually build a pair of 20-point leads in the stanza, the final one coming with 2:30 on the clock after a layup by senior Nick Tupanjanin, before heading into halftime with a 50-34 advantage.

In the second half, NYU drew to within 12 points at 61-49 with 15:44 on the clock, but Emory responded with six unanswered points, the first four by Davet, that pushed it to a 67-49 lead.  The Violets narrowed their deficit to a dozen points with 11:33 remaining, but the Eagles accounted for 12 of the game's next 17 points, highlighted by Schner scoring five points and Stuck draining a triple, to cement control of the game with an 83-64 bulge with 8:08 left.

Schner hit six-of-10 field goal attempts, including two-of-four from distance, in posting his 19th double-figure scoring performance of the season.  Davet was successful on six field goals in nine attempts and also sank a pair of treys en route to his 14th contest of 10 or more points.  The Eagles turned the ball over just six times to the Violets' 14 miscues, resulting in a decided 21-7 edge in the points-off-turnover category.

Emory, now in a first-place tie in the UAA with Washington University, returns to action on Sunday (Feb. 16) when it hosts Brandeis. The game against the Judges will be Senior Day with those festivities starting at 11:45 am.
