Emory Men's Basketball Comes Away Victorious At Carnegie Mellon

Juniors Matt Schner and Lawrence Rowley combined for 48 points in sparking the Emory men's basketball team to a Friday evening win at Carnegie Mellon University.  The No. 8-ranked Eagles won their fourth straight contest, upping their overall record to 20-3, 10-2 in the University Athletic Association following a 98-86 decision over the Tartans who fell to 10-13 overall, 3-9 in the conference. The victory kept Emory tied with Washington University for the top spot in the league.

Schner dialed up 27 points on the night, tying his second-highest output of the campaign, hitting seven-of-13 from the floor and all 13 of his free throw opportunities. His makes from the foul line represented the high-water mark by an Emory player this year. Schner also paced the Eagles with 10 rebounds, his sixth double-double of the season and seventh effort with double-digit boards.  Rowley finished with 21 points, converting eight-of-13 field goal tries, including two three-pointers, and three-of-four from the stripe in notching his 18th double-figure scoring performance of the season and fifth with 20 or more points. Rowley also recorded eight rebounds and a career-high six assists.  Junior Matt Davet poured in 16 points, which included four triples, while Luke Morrison rounded out Emory's double-digit scorers with 10 points. Emory has scored 90 or more points in its last three and in a total of 11 contests this season.

Facing a 15-point halftime deficit, CMU drew to within seven with 14:59 left in the game following a three-pointer by Nick Nakasian.  The Eagles then regained a double-digit advantage when a three-pointer by Romin Williams followed by a basket by Rowley pushed them to a 67-55 margin. The Tartans stayed within striking distance and trailed by eight points before Emory went on a 10-2 scoring spree, keyed by a pair of three-pointers by Morrison and four free throws by Schner to go ahead by an 86-70 count with 7:07 remaining. CMU then mounted a 12-2 charge and cut its gap to six points with 2:39 left following a basket by Zach Howarth. However, that would by the Tartans' final field goal of the game as they missed their final five attempts from the floor while the Eagles scored their final 10 points from the foul line, with Schner sinking all four of his attempts, to secure the victory.

CMU held the edge in field goal shooting, sinking 50 percent (30-of-60) compared to Emory's mark of 46.5 percent (33-of-71).  The Eagles were successful on 29 percent (9-of-31) from beyond the arc while the Tartans checked in at 28.6 percent (6-of-21).  Emory sank 23 free throws (high for a conference game this season) in 29 opportunities while CMU went 20-of-25. Emory finished with a 38-33 advantage in rebounding.

Emory shot a blazing 57.9 percent (22-of-38) from the floor during the opening 20 minutes of action and took a 55-40 lead into halftime.  Ahead by a 37-35 margin with 4:14 left in the stanza the Eagles closed out the half on an 18-5 burst, started by a 10-0 run that was ignited by back-to-back triples by Davet. After a Tartan three-pointer, a reverse layup by Schner followed by another Davet three-pointer stretched the Eagles to a 52-38 cushion. A pair of charity tosses by CMU's Nick Nakasian, Davet's fourth trey of the half with 29 ticks on the clock closed out the scoring.  Davet scored 14 points, sinking five-of-seven from the floor, including four-of-five from distance, while Schner rang up 13 points.

Emory returns to action on Sunday when it plays at Case Western Reserve in a noon tip.
