Buzzer-Beating Triple Pushes Pomona-Pitzer To NCAA Tourney Win Over Emory

Buzzer-Beating Triple Pushes Pomona-Pitzer To NCAA Tourney Win Over Emory

Senior Jack Boyle's three-pointer from the corner as time expired enabled Pomona-Pitzer to come away with a Saturday evening win at Emory in the second round of the NCAA D-III Men's Basketball Tournament.  The Sagehens upped their record to 24-5 following a 71-70 decision over the Eagles who capped off their year with a ledger of 22-5.  The win puts Pomona-Pitzer into next weekend's Round of 16 where it will match-up against Elmhurst.

A put-back bucket by Matt Schner with 2.8 seconds left put the Eagles ahead by a 70-68 margin. Pomona then got the ball to half court on the inbounds where it called time out.   Coming out of the break, Jack Kelbert threw a high-arching pass that found Boyle in the corner.  After a shot fake, he launched his attempt that found its mark, ending Emory's season in the process.

Ahead by a 41-39 margin early in the second half, Emory posted a 7-1 spurt, ignited by a three-pointer by Matt Davet, that gave it the first of four eight-point leads.  A basket by Lawrence Rowley with 9:33 on the clock kept Emory ahead by a 55-47 count before seeing a basket by Kelbert slice the Eagles' margin to three points with 7:15 remaining.  A three-pointer by Schner just as the shot clock expired extended Emory's advantage to six points, but the Sagehens knotted the score at 62-62 following a 6-0 spurt in a 78-second span.  Emory regained the lead with 3:54 on the clock after a Schner trey, and following a bucket by Pomona's Micah Elan, Davet nailed a three-pointer that boosted the Eagles to a 68-64 lead with 3:05 on the clock.  A pair of charity tosses by Elan drew the Sagehens to a pair with 2:39 left before a basket by Elan tied the score at 68-68 with 26 ticks on the clock.

Davet tied for game scoring honors with 20 points, hitting five-of-seven from the field, including three-of-five from beyond the arc, and seven-of-eight from the free throw line in registering his fifth contest of 20 or more points this season.  Schner totaled 15 points, converting six field goals in 10 tries and three-of-four from the foul line.  Romin Williams contributed 16 points.

Elan pumped in 20 points for Pomona-Pitzer, 15 in the second half, winding up the night eight-of-17 from the floor.

The Sagehens outshot Emory from the floor, 46.6 percent (27-of-58) to 37.9 percent (25-of-66), and held the upper hand in three-point shooting, connecting at a 40.9 percent (9-of-22) clip to the Eagles' 28.6 percent (10-of-35).   Rowley paced Emory on the glass with 11 boards, his ninth effort with double figures in that category.
