Men's Basketball Downs Maryville, 78-69, in Top-25 Clash

The Emory University men's basketball program won a matchup featuring two top-25 teams Sunday afternoon, defeating Maryville College 78-69 at the WoodPEC in Atlanta, GA.

The No. 13 ranked Eagles won their second straight to improve to 3-2 overall while the loss was the first for the Scots this season as they fell to 4-1.

Senior Matthew Schner went for 26 points, six rebounds and five assists to lift Emory to the nine-point victory. Classmate Nick Stuck finished with 14 points to go along with six assists and six rebounds while freshman Logan Shanahan recorded his first career double-double with 12 points and a team-high 10 rebounds. The Eagles saw six players grab at least six boards in the contest with freshman Cale Martens collecting eight and juniors Mason Johnson and Greg Lawrence each contributing seven as the team totaled a season-best 55 rebounds, thirteen more than the Scots.

For Maryville, Felix Uadiale paced four players in double figures with 17 points and registered a game-high 12 rebounds. The team's leading scorer entering the game, Myles Rasnick, netted 14 while JR Sanders and Jekobe Coleman had 11 and 10, respectively.

The Eagles shook off a dreadful start where they made one of their first 15 shots to fall behind 18-2 through the first six minutes, eventually taking the lead at 25-24 on a made Romin Williams layup at 6:30. Schner scored 11 of the team's points during the 23-6 run with Williams, Stuck and Shanahan chipping in with four points apiece.

The teams traded baskets before the Eagles closed out the half on an 8-0 run on the back of converted threes from Shanahan and Lawrence to send Emory into halftime leading 36-31. Martens and Stuck made field goals out of the break to push the lead to 40-31 before the Scots answered with 17-6 burst to take a 48-46 lead with 12:44 remaining.

The teams stayed closed over the next five minutes before a Lawrence triple gave the Eagles a seven point advantage. Sanders countered on the other end with a three of his own but a Williams three back down the floor put Emory in front 64-57 at 5:45 with the Scots never getting within five for the remainder of the game.

Emory looks to keep the momentum going as the Eagles host LaGrange College this Wednesday, December 1. Tip off from the WoodPEC is scheduled for 8:00 PM.
