Men's Basketball Downs Birmingham-Southern, 91-67, in Emory Holiday Classic Finale

The Emory University men's basketball program closed out its Holiday Classic in strong form Thursday afternoon, defeating Birmingham-Southern 91-67 at the Woodruff PE Center in Atlanta, GA.

Five different Eagles registered double digits in points as Emory won its second consecutive game. Senior Matthew Schner notched another double-double, his fourth of the season, scoring a game-high 19 points to go along with 11 rebounds which led both teams. Schner was one of three starters over 10 points with classmate Nick Stuck posting 15 points and freshman Cale Martens contributing 14. Freshman Albert Fallas provided a boost off the bench for the Eagles, going for a career-high 12 points as he sank four three pointers while senior Romin Williams rounded out the top Emory scorers with a 10-point performance.

For the Panthers, forward Christian Stewart went for 29 points and 10 rebounds to highlight the visitors. Stewart was the lone BSC player in double figures as he finished 10-for-16 from the field and 9-for-11 from the line.

The Eagles limited Birmingham-Southern to 34.9% from the floor (22-for-63) and shot 42.7% as a team including making 11 threes, the second-highest total by Emory this season. The Eagles were more aggressive on the glass, winning the rebounding battle 57-35 and forced 13 BSC turnovers.

Emory started the game slow, falling behind 11-3 through the first five minutes. However, the Eagles quickly turned things around with an 11-2 burst that saw them take their first lead at 14-13 with 10:14 to go in the half. With the score knotted at 18-18, Emory maintained the momentum and used a 24-10 run over the next eight minutes to build a 14-point cushion, eventually heading into the halftime break in front 42-34.

Birmingham-Southern cut the deficit to five within the opening minutes of the second half but a 10-1 counter headlined by three pointers by Stuck and freshman Logan Shanahan aided the Eagles to a 56-42 lead at 13:14 remaining with Emory never seeing the lead dip below nine for the remainder of the game.

The Eagles are back in action Sunday afternoon (Jan. 2) as they take on crosstown foe Oglethorpe University. Tip off in Brookhaven is scheduled for 3:00 PM.
