Men's Basketball Wins Third Straight; Topples Oglethorpe 87-65

The Emory University men's basketball team began the new calendar year with a convincing win over crosstown rival Oglethorpe University Sunday afternoon, defeating the Stormy Petrels 87-65 in Brookhaven, GA.

Senior Matthew Schner turned in his second straight double-double with 25 points and 14 rebounds while adding a season-high six assists as the Eagles won their third straight game. Schner now has five double-doubles through 10 games and recorded his fifth performance with at least 20 points.

Classmate Nick Stuck and freshman Logan Shanahan joined Schner in double figures with Stuck going for 14 points to go along with six assists and Shanahan posting 11 points and grabbed eight rebounds.

The Eagles were on fire from the field on the afternoon, recording season-best efforts in field goal shooting (51.5%), three-point percentage (45.5%) and three pointers made (15). Oglethorpe shot 37.5% as a team (24-for-64) but were just 7-for-25 from behind the arc. They were lead in scoring from a 25-point performance by guard Dimerti Chambers.

With the score 17-15 in favor of Emory at the 12:50 mark of the first half, the Eagles went on a 19-2 run over next six minutes with seven different Eagles scoring to distance themselves from OU. The Stormy Petrels cut into the deficit across the final minutes of the half, eventually trailing Emory by 11 at the break.

Oglethorpe scored the first seven points of the second half to move within four at 18:31 but proceeded to score only seven more points over the next 10 minutes as the Eagles used a 25-7 run to grab their largest lead to that point at 22 (72-50) right before the under-eight timeout. Emory remained in control, never seeing the lead dip below 18 for the final eight minutes and led by as many as 26.

The Eagles wrap up the non-conference portion of their schedule at home this Tuesday, January 4th at 5:30pm against Huntingdon College. As a reminder, while Emory University is under an orange operating condition, spectators will be restricted from attending sporting events.
