Men's Basketball Falters in Top-25 Clash Against WashU

The No. 25 ranked Emory University men's basketball team saw its four-game winning streak snapped Friday night, falling to No. 4 ranked Washington University at the Woodruff PE Center, 72-61.

For the Eagles, senior Matthew Schner continued his strong season scoring 20 points on 8-18 shooting, marking his fourth consecutive game that he has led the team in scoring. Freshman Cale Martens had a good all-around game going for six points, five rebounds and a team-leading three blocks. Senior Nick Stuck continued his role as the floor general dishing out four assists to go along with 12 points including 2-for-4 from beyond the arc.

A slow start to the game set the stage as neither team was able to score their first points until over four minutes into the game when the Bears recorded their first bucket. It wouldn't be until just after the 12 minute-mark in the first half that the Eagles notched their first points of the night as senior Romin Williams converted on a pull-up jumper to cut the Bears lead to six at 8-2.

Despite the sluggish beginning, the Eagles kept the game within reach going as they went into the locker room at halftime trailing 32-23. Teammates Logan Shanahan and Schner came out of the break on a mission, managing to cut the Bears lead down to four with 17 minutes left to play. That would be the closest the Eagles would get for the remainder of the game as the Bears closed out the game with a 72-61 victory.

The Eagles return to action tomorrow, January 15, against the University of Chicago Maroons at 4:00 PM at the Woodruff PE Center. (NOTE: This game was originally scheduled for Sunday but has been moved to Saturday due to anticipated inclement weather.) As a reminder, no fans will be permitted inside the Woodruff PE Center for the game as Emory continues operating under an orange operating condition.
