Men's Basketball Sinks Carnegie Mellon 87-86 in Overtime

Senior Matthew Schner hit the game-winning jumper with four seconds left in overtime to give the Emory University men's basketball team an 87-86 win over Carnegie Mellon University Sunday afternoon at the Woodruff PE Center in Atlanta.

With the victory, the No. 18 ranked Eagles move to 18-5 on the year and 11-2 inside the UAA with one game remaining. The Tartans fall to 11-11 and 4-8 in conference play.

Schner was unbelievable for the Eagles scoring 28 points, including the game-winner, as well as pulling down 11 rebounds to mark his sixth double-double of the season. Schner finished the weekend with a combined 67 points, marking the most points in a two-game stretch of his career. Senior Nick Stuck had a standout day of his own scoring a career-high 25 points as well as eight assists. On the defensive end, Stuck's defensive pressure was vital for the Eagles as he generated three steals. Freshman Albert Fallas had 12 points, including two pivotal threes in the overtime period that allowed Emory to get within striking distance of Carnegie Mellon.

In what was a back-and-forth affair from start to finish, the Eagles were able to distinguish themselves by capitalizing on the Tartans' mistakes. Emory forced Carnegie Mellon into 18 turnovers and scored a remarkable 25 points off of those turnovers. The Eagles also took any opportunity they could to push the ball in transition which ultimately led to them outsourcing the Tartans in fast break points 13-2.

The game was tight from the start as neither team led by more than two points until the 12 minute mark of the opening half when Fallas hit his first of three triples to give Emory a 21-17 lead. The Eagles seized the momentum from that moment, turning it into an 8-0 run which included a big three point make from senior Romin Williams.

The Tartans kept the game within reach however as they headed to the locker room trailing by five at 43-38. Freshman Cale Martens got the gym rocking early in the second half with a steal and fast break dunk to give Emory a 47-42 edge.

Around the halfway point of the second half, the Tartans went on their first big run of the game, outshooting the Eagles 8-2 to give the visitors their largest lead of the game at 70-63. Emory locked in defensively down the stretch holding the Tartans scoreless for over six minutes, allowing the Eagles to go on a 12-0 run to retake a five point lead at 75-70 with 1:49 remaining in regulation.

Two free throws and a big three pointer from the Tartans saw the game tied at 78 with 49 seconds to go. Carnegie Mellon had a chance to take the lead with under 20 seconds left but missed from deep off the hands of Nick Nakasian.

The Eagles called timeout with five seconds left to run one final play. Out of the timeout, Emory was able to get off a great look as Stuck drove and kicked to Williams in the corner but his shot at the buzzer clanked off the rim to send the game into overtime.

The Tartans had control of the extra session early, leading the Eagles by six at 85-79 with just under two minutes to play. At that point, Fallas stepped up big time as he drained two massive three pointers in just over a minute including his second with 24 seconds on the clock to tie the game back up at 85.

A foul on a drive from the Tartans' R.J. Holmes would earn a trip to the line where Holmes went 1-2 and gave the Eagles the ball back down one with ten seconds to play. Another called timeout from the Emory bench set up the Eagles to run the play they wanted. On the inbounds, Stuck flew down the court and quickly found Schner curling off a screen allowing Schner to flow into a pull up jumper from the elbow which he sank with his usual calm and composure that has defined his season.

With one last chance for the Tartans, the Eagles were able to get a deflection off of the inbounds pass which forced Carnegie Mellon into a half court heave that hit the front-end of the rim.

The Eagles close out the regular season this Saturday, February 26th at 2:00 PM when they will take on University of Rochester at the Woodruff PE Center. Prior to the start of the game, Emory will honor its three member senior class of Schner, Stuck and Williams.
