2021-22 Men's Basketball Season Recap

2021-22 Men's Basketball Season Recap

Led by a strong veteran presence, the Emory University men's basketball team returned to competition after having its previous season cancelled due to the pandemic and resumed its role as one of the premier basketball programs in the Division III world.

On the strength of arguably the most talented graduating classes in team history of Matthew Schner, Nick Stuck and Romin Williams, the Eagles reached the 20-win mark for the fourth straight season as they finished 20-6 and earned a berth to the NCAA tournament for the ninth straight season, the longest active current streak in Division III.

The Eagles secured the berth into the 64-team field after capturing the University Athletic Association championship for the third straight year and sixth time overall during Head Coach Jason Zimmerman's tenure. Emory went 12-2 in UAA play, tying the program record for most wins during the conference slate, and won the league by 3.5 games – the largest gap between first and second place since 2013-14. It was the fourth season in a row the team had won 11 or more UAA contests.

Emory was chosen to host the opening rounds for the second straight NCAA tournament and welcomed Averett, Berry and Wabash to Atlanta for the first and second rounds. The Eagles escaped an upset bid from Averett on the opening night before going toe-to-toe with Wabash in the second round. Emory ultimately fell to the Little Giants, who would go on to reach the Final Four, 87-86 in an instant classic despite a herculean effort from Schner. The senior, playing in his final game for the Eagles, recorded the second triple double in program history, going for 30 points, 15 rebounds and 11 assists.

Schner's effort against Wabash was just one of many epic performances he had during the season as he etched his name in the school's record books and as one of the very best to put on an Emory uniform. Schner, who set the program record for points scored as he averaged 23.5 points across the 26-game schedule was recognized with a bevy of post season awards, most notably as one of five players to be named as a First Team All-American by D3hoops.com, a Second Team All-American by the National Association of Basketball Coaches, Academic First Team All-American by the College Sports Information Directors of America and was one of 11 finalists for the Jostens Trophy which goes to the all-around best player in Division III.

His accolades extended to the UAA as he was named the conference's Player of the Year for a second time and was tabbed to the All-Association First Team along with Stuck. The duo added D3hoops.com All-Region acclaim after leading the team in nearly every statistical campaign. Stuck set career highs in points, assists, rebounds, steals and minutes as he finished his outstanding career as one of the top guards to come through the program.

Coach Zimmerman along with his assistant added UAA honors as he and his support staff of Gebereal Baitey, Charlie Copp and Jacob Fleegle were honored as the Coaching Staff of the Year. It marked the the sixth time Zimmerman and his staff had won the award.

To go along with Schner and Stuck, Williams rounded out his exhilarating career as he ended the year third on the team in minutes and points after transitioning the sixth-man role. Williams knocked down 37 threes on the year which trailed Schner's 67 for the team lead to give him 241 in his career, becoming the all-time leader in that category in program history.

The Eagles also saw a trio of freshman shine in their first taste of collegiate ball with forwards Cale Martens and Logan Shanahan making names for themselves down low as Martens averaged 7.3 PPG and 5.2 RPG while Shanahan posting marks of 7.6 PPG and 4.9 RPG while Albert Fallas stepped up on the perimeter, making 13 starts and shooting 40% from long range as he knocked down 28 triples.

Other notables from the season included: seven games with 90 or more points including hitting the century mark in a win over NYU on January 30; the team sinking a single-game school and UAA record of 21 threes at Carnegie Mellon; Stuck draining a regulation buzzer beater as Emory erased a 19-point second half deficit to defeat Brandeis on the road (1/28); Schner going for 39 points – two shy of the team's single-game record to lead a comeback over CWRU to clinch the UAA title; Schner sinking the game-winner with 4.0 seconds left the next game to defeat CMU in overtime; Schner scoring 20 points or more in the final 12 games of the season culminating with his triple double in the season finale against Wabash.
