Chris McHugh was elevated to Associate Coach of the Emory men's basketball program in March of 2017.  He originally joined the staff as an assistant coach in September of 2013.

During his four years with the Eagles, McHugh has helped the program to an overall record of 80-31, which includes four trips to the NCAA Tournament, three straight appearances in the Round of 16 (2014, 2015, 2016), one Elite Eight berth and two University Athletic Association titles (2015 & 2016).  He has coached a total of eight first- or second-team All-UAA players and two All-Americans (Jake Davis and Alex Foster).

"In the last four years, Emory Basketball has experienced unprecedented success," said head coach Jason Zimmerman.  "Chris has played a major part in all aspects of that success, and continues to improve and, in turn, has inspired our players, staff and program to do the same.  Chris will make an excellent head coach but until then we are fortunate to have him on the sidelines and in our community helping our student athletes."

McHugh came to Emory after serving as an assistant coach at Connecticut College College during the 2012-13 season.  While with the Camels’ program, he worked with Matt Vadas who ranked as the NESCAC’s leading scorer with a 20.2 points-per-game average.

Prior to his stint at Connecticut College, McHugh spent three seasons (2009-10 through 2011-12) as an assistant coach at Mount Saint Mary College (NY).  During his tenure with the Knights, he helped the program to an overall won-lost ledger of 52-31 including a 23-7 effort in 2011-12 which established a school record for most wins in a season.  The prior year, the Mount recorded a 19-9 overall mark and finished second in the Skyline Conference with a school record 16-4 record.

As a player, McHugh was a four-year letter winner at Washington and Lee (2005-09), leading the team in assists his junior and senior seasons.  A starter in 72 games during his career, McHugh ranked sixth on the Generals’ all-time list in three-point field goals.  His final year saw W&L post 16 wins, the program’s highest total since 1990, and earn a spot in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference championship game.

McHugh has served as a counselor at various basketball camps, including Davidson, Yale, Pennsylvania, and Brown.

McHugh earned his bachelor’s degree in politics from Washington and Lee in 2009. He obtained his master’s degree in sports management from Fairleigh Dickinson in March of 2012.
