The No. 6/3 ranked Emory University Men's Soccer team saw its eight-game winning streak snapped on Saturday afternoon, falling to Washington University, 2-1, in the University Athletic Association opener at Francis Field in St. Louis.

The Eagles fell behind 2-0 in the contest and despite a late second half flurry were unable to find the equalizer in the match. Emory won the shots battle 16-12 and outpaced the Bears in shots on goal, 8-3.

WashU's Marc Vandenberg struck first for the home team in the 25^th minute, scoring to the far corner off the pass into the box by Andrew Brunetti. The score remained 1-0 until WashU found the back of the net for the second time in the 61^st minute as Nao Yanase took advantage of a failed Emory clear attempt and scored on a left-footed one-timer shot over the head of sophomore Cole Gallagher.

Emory cut the deficit to one in the 71^st minute as the Eagles capitalized on a failed clear attempt by the Bears. Junior William Jones found classmate Jun Tsuru with a great back heel pass before Tsuru beat the WashU keeper to the far post for his fifth goal of the season.

Emory was held to just one goal on the afternoon thanks to the heroics of the Bears' Matt Martin who made several highlight reel stops in only his second start of the season. Martin finished the game with seven saves as he improved to 2-0.

Next up for the Eagles will be a pivotal UAA matchup against the No. 2 ranked Chicago Maroons next Saturday, October 6^th, in Atlanta. Kickoff at the Woodruff PE Center is set for 11:00 AM EST.

Notes

The loss to the Bears also snaps the Eagles' 13-game unbeaten streak which was tied for the fourth longest streak in team history and longest since the team's 14-game unbeaten streak that spanned the end of 2013 season and beginning of 2014.
