Carnegie Mellon Tops Men's Soccer, 1-0, on Late Second Half Goal

The Emory University men's soccer team suffered a hard-luck loss Sunday afternoon, falling on the road to Carnegie Mellon University, 1-0, in Pittsburgh, PA.

The loss drops the Eagles to 7-5-2 overall on the season and 1-2-1 in University Athletic Association contests while the Tartans improve to 6-6-1 and 2-2 in UAA action.

With the score tied in the waning minutes of regulation, CMU saw Jacob Moskowitz come through with the game-winner, pushing across a header shot before sophomore Max Carlson was able to swat it away following a free kick by Elliot Cohen at the 83:00-minute mark.

The Tartans defense held strong in the second half, not allowing the Eagles to get a shot on goal in the period. Junior Nate Sampson had Emory's best scoring chance in the second half, firing a missile over the crossbar in the 72nd minute.

For the game, Carnegie Mellon led in shots 16-10, shots on goal, 6-4, and corner kicks, 7-3. Carlson played well in the defeat in his sixth start of the year, making five starts as he slipped to 3-2-1 between the posts.

The game was a physical affair a combined 26 fouls and six cards distributed including a red card issued to senior Jun Tsuru in the 23rd minute of the opening half.

The Eagles will look to rebound in their final non-conference match of the season against Piedmont College next Sunday, October 27th. Kickoff from the WoodPEC is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
