Men's Swimming & Diving Begins Season with 153-109 Win over Queens University of Charlotte

The Emory University Men's Swimming & Diving team opened up the dual meet portion of the 2016-17 season on Saturday afternoon, knocking off the top-ranked and defending Division II National Champions Queens University of Charlotte, 153-109. The Eagles recorded nine event victories and four NCAA B Cut times en route to the victory over the Royals.

Senior Andrew Wilson led all Emory swimmers, touching the wall first in three individual events at the meet. The senior claimed first in the 100 Breast (55.87) and 200 Breast (2:03.00), both NCAA B Cut times, as well as in the 200 IM with a time of 1:54.41. Wilson added a first place showing in 400 Medley Relay, teaming with freshman Sage Ono, senior Christian Baker and junior Oliver Smith to record a NCAA B Cut time of 3:20.13.

Also notching event wins for Emory were sophomore Thomas Gordon in the 1000 Free (9:36.99), Ono in the 100 Back (51.22), Smith in the 50 Free (20.51 – NCAA B Cut), Baker in the 500 Free (4:37.13) and the 200 Freestyle Relay quartet of sophomore Trey Kolleck, Smith, junior Alexander Hardwick and senior Hayes Burdette-Sapp (1:23.31).

Other notable finishes for the Eagles on Saturday were junior Henry Copses in the 1000 Free (2nd, 9:40.39), Baker in the 200 Free (2nd, 1:42.50), senior Mitchell Cooper in the 100 Back (2nd, 51.85) and the 200 IM (2nd, 1:54.94), freshman Evan Brock in the 200 Fly (2nd, 1:57.60), Ono in the 200 Back (2nd, 1:53.78), junior Cooper Tollen in the 100 Fly (2nd, 52.03), Kolleck in the 50 Free (3rd, 21.10), Hardwick in the 100 Free (3rd, 46.95), freshman Chandler Vandiford in the 200 Back (3rd, 1:54.51), junior Chandler Lichtefeld in the 200 Breast (3rd, 2:10.39) and Gordon in the 500 Free (3rd, 4:43.38). The Emory B relay foursome of Ono, junior Aaron Schwartz, and sophomores Alex Kohlman and Michael Grenon also added a top-3 finish in the 200 Free Relay to close out the meet for the Eagles, touching with a time of 1:25.79.

The Eagles return to the pool on November 5th as the team hosts Savannah College of Arts and Design at the Madeleine Jude Brown Aquatic Center inside the Woodruff PE Center at 2:00 pm.
