Lucas Bumgarner Places First in 1-Meter Event at NCAA Regionals

Freshman Lucas Bumgarner put on another impressive showing on day one of the NCAA Region 2 Diving Championships in Grinnell, IA, placing first in the 1-meter event.

Bumgarner earned one of the region's four allocations for nationals later this month with his strong showing on Friday. Bumgarner was one of two divers of the 12 competitor-field to top the 500 mark, finishing with top honors with a career-high score of 518.95. He edged out Trinity's Daniel Valmassei who recorded a score of 502.90. Claremont-Mudd-Scripps' Kendall Hollimon rounded out the top three with a score of 466.35.

Bumgarner averaged 47.18 per round and distanced himself from the rest of the field with his round 10 dive, Inward 2 ½ Somersault Tuck, where he scored 72.85, by far the highest score by any diver on a single dive on the afternoon.

Bumgarner, already locked into a potential NCAA berth, continues regionals with his teammates on Saturday with the 3-meter, 11-dives event at 12:00 PM local time.
