Andrew Wilson Advances to 100m Breaststroke Semifinals at Tokyo Olympics

Andrew Wilson is moving on! The former Emory University swimming standout has advanced to the semifinals of the 100m Breaststroke at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, Japan.

Wilson posted the seventh-fastest preliminary time at 59.03 and will be one of 16 swimmers competing in tonight's two semifinal heats. The semifinals are scheduled to begin at 10:33 PM EDT and will be shown live on local NBC affiliates and on NBCOlympics.com.

Wilson, swimming in the second of three circle-seeded heats, turned in a second place showing in heat six as he finished only behind the Netherland’s Arno Kamminga (57.80). Wilson got off to a slow start as he was sixth at the 50m turn at 27.94 before finishing strong with a 31.09 over the final 50m (second-fastest final 50m in the heat) to jump up four spots.

Wilson is one of two Americans to advance to the semifinals as countrymate Michael Andrew joins Wilson in the top 16 with his time of 58.62, the third-fastest mark in the preliminaries. Great Britain’s Adam Peaty, the reigning Gold medal winner in the event, led all swimmers in the prelims with his time of 57.56.
