Former Swimmer Zachary Chen Named Recipient of NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship

Former standout Zachary Chen of the Emory University men's swimming & diving program has been named as a winter recipient of the prestigious NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship, bestowed upon student-athletes who excel academically and athletically, while also serving as leaders in the community. The NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship, a $10,000 award will be applied toward his current or future graduate degree program.

Chen is the latest Eagle to be selected as a recipient of the prestigious award, bringing Emory's total to 122 in its history and its 105 since 2000 is second only to Stanford University for the most of any NCAA member institution.

Chen was a valuable member of the swimming & diving program from 2016-19, helping the Eagles to four University Athletic Association team championships and was part of Emory's national teams in 2018 and 2019, leading the team to national runner-up finishes at both meets. Chen was a late bloomer on team as he did not make the national team his first two seasons before he began to excel his final two years, culminating with an excellent performance as a senior when he captured a national championship with his teammates as part of the 200 Freestyle Relay and secured All-America honors for the first as an individual, earning Honorable Mention status with his ninth place finish in the 200 IM. In addition to his performance at the NCAA Championships, Chen was a three-time CSCAA Scholar All-American and three-time All-UAA finisher including the 2019 title in the 200 Freestyle Relay.

Away the pool, Zach finished with a 3.70 GPA as a Chemistry major with a minor in Economics and was very active in the community, serving in numerous roles for Meals on Wheels-Atlanta, Labrador Friends of the South, Trees Atlanta and Special Olympics of Georgia. Furthermore, he has spent time as an emergency medical technician, research coordinator at Emory's sleep center clinic and as a research lab assistant in organic chemistry. This summer, he plans to begin graduate school at Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit, MI.
