2021-22 Men's Swimming & Diving Season Recap

2021-22 Men's Swimming & Diving Season Recap

After seeing the previous two NCAA championship meets cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic as well as the entire 2021-22 season, the Emory University men's swimming & diving team returned to competition this past year and reestablished itself atop the Division III swimming & diving landscape.

For the second time in team history and first since 2017, the Eagles were crowned the Division III national champions at the NCAA Championships in Indianapolis, IN. A dominating four-day stretch where the Blue & Gold recorded national championships in three events, broke one national record and four school records, turned in 17 All-America finishes and 17 All-America Honorable Mention culminated with the team lifting the Walnut & Bronze on the podium for the second time in the last four national meets. The Eagles totaled 427.5 team points during the week, nearly 90 points more than second place Johns Hopkins.

Jason Hamilton was one of the individual standouts at the meet as he repeated as the 200 Breaststroke national champion, throwing down a winning time of 1:55.83 – the second fastest time in the event in NCAA DIII history behind Andrew Wilson.

Hamilton added a national championship along with Logan D'Amore, Nicholas Goudie and Pat Pema in the 800 Freestyle Relay, doing so with a blistering 6:28.69 to establish a new NCAA Division III national record.

The Eagles third national championship of the meet came on the first night as Colin LaFave, Jake Meyer, Hwa Min Sim and Ryan Soh teamed up to win the 200 Medley Relay, setting the tone for the week that followed.

All told, Goudie and Pema led the way with seven and five All-America honors, respectively, with Hamilton added four All-America awards.

Head Coach Jon Howell was also presented with the CSCAA National Coach of the Year. It is the second time Howell has earned the men's honor (2017) and the eighth time overall.

A month prior, the Eagles extended their reign over their University Athletic Association counterparts by winning their 23rd consecutive conference title. Emory won nine event titles, racked up 22 All-UAA performances and set three conference records as they won the meet by over 280 points.

Lucas Bumgarner and Jeff Echols collected two of the major awards handed out at the end of the meet as Bumgarner won his third Diver of the Meet award with Echols claiming Rookie of the Year honors. Furthermore, Howell along with Cindy Fontana, John Petroff and Bob Hackett were named co-winners of the Men's Coaching Staff of the Year, representing the sixth time Howell and his staff have earned the men's honor. Interim Diving Coach Matt Rohrer also was recognized as he was tabbed as the Men's Diving Coach of the Year.

In addition, Hamilton and Bumgarner were recognized by CoSIDA for athletic and academic excellence, earning spots on the Academic All-District Team. Hamilton, an Emory 100 Senior Honorary, also became the latest Eagle in program history to be named an Academic All-American as he earned First Team acclaim.
