No. 2-ranked Emory University will take on 4th-ranked Williams College in the quarterfinals of the 2018 NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Championships on Monday, May 21, in a scheduled 3:00 pm (EDT) start. The Championships will be held at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center in Claremont, California. The Eagles' enter the competition as the defending national champions.
Emory enters Monday's match with wins in four of its last five outings and an overall record of 18-4 (16-2 in D-III action). The Eagles advanced to the quarterfinals after hosting the opening rounds this past weekend where they registered a 5-1 second-round decision over Washington and Lee followed by a 5-0 triumph over No. 23 North Carolina Wesleyan in the third round
Emory has three singles players slotted among the top 18 in the Atlantic South Region including No. 2 junior Jonathan Jemison (17-10), No. 4 freshman Hayden Cassone (24-5) and No. 18 senior Alec Josepher (17-9). In addition, the Eagles claim the No. 4-ranked doubles team in the Region in senior Scott Rubinstein and junior James Spaulding (19-11).
Over the past 29 years the Eagles have advanced to at least the quarterfinals on 27 occasions. Emory has earned a spot in the national semifinals in 12 of the past 16 seasons has won national crowns in 2003, 2006, 2012 and 2017.
Williams claims a won-lost slate of 15-4 and advanced into the quarterfinals after hosting and defeating Goucher (5-0) and No. 8-ranked Amherst (5-2) in regional play this past weekend. The Ephs have won four of their last five.
Emory edged Williams, 5-3, in the quarterfinals of last year's Championships in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
The winning team will advance to the national semifinals on Tuesday (2:00 pm EDT) where it will square off against the winner of No. 1-ranked Middlebury and No. 20 Whitman. The national title will be decided on Wednesday at 2:00 pm (EDT).
