The Emory men's tennis team wrapped up the first day of play at the 2019 Grizzly Open on Friday.  Hosting the Grizzly Open is Georgia Gwinnett College.

Senior Hassan Kenawi and freshman Mark Sverdlov moved into Saturday's Round of 16 in the A Singles Draw after capturing their opening two matches.

Seeded No. 8 in the 64-player field Sverdlov registered a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Ids Waterbolk of Carson-Newman, followed by a 6-7, 6-4, 1-0 (10-8) verdict over Georgia Gwinnett's Gregor Hutterer.  Sverdlov will square off against Tusculum's Yago Fernandez on Saturday morning with the winner of that matchup moving into the quarterfinals later in the afternoon.

Kenawi bettered Point University's Trey Maust, 7-5, 7-5 in his initial test before advancing following another 7-5, 7-5 win against Gabriel Yaguar of Tusculum.  Kenawi's Round of 16 opponent will be No. 7 seed Mika Kosonen of Georgia Gwinnett.

In the A Doubles Draw, the Eagles will have six teams competing in the Round of 32. Pushkar Shinde and Daniel Sanz came away with a 6-0 win over a team from Carson-Newman while William Coupe and Michael Moll rolled to a 6-0 outcome over Point University's Matthew Bagley and Gavin Thomas.  The other four Emory teams drew first-round byes.
