Men's Tennis Earns Home Win Over XULA, 6-3

The Emory University men's tennis team earned a 6-3 victory over NAIA opponent Xavier University of Louisiana at the Woodruff PE Center on Friday to bring its season record to 2-4.

The Eagles started the contest in a quick hole trailing after the completion of the doubles matches. Sophomore Ryan Glanville and senior Antonio Mora were the first to finish dropping their doubles match 8-4 and were quickly followed by seniors Andrew Esses and Sahil Raina who also dropped their match 8-4. Sophomores Nolan Shah and Sujay Sharma helped put a dent into the Gold Rush's lead earning an 8-4 win at No. 3 doubles.

Emory made most of its noise in singles though where they won five out of six matches to put XULA away. The Eagles earned the first three wins of singles play with Esses (6-3, 6-1), graduate student Santiago Suarez (6-2, 6-2) and Sharma (6-3, 6-4) each earning straight set victories over their opponents and putting the Eagles up 4-2. With Mora falling at No. 1 singles (6-4, 6-3) and the Eagles needing just one more victory to lock up the match win, Shah stepped up at No. 3 singles taking his match down to the wire before winning in a second set tiebreaker 6-4, 7-6 (7-3) to win the match for Emory. Junior William Coupe would go on to win his match at the six spot in a third set tiebreaker 3-6, 7-6 (7-5), 1-0 (10-4).

The Eagles return to play on Saturday, March 12th at 9:00 AM at the Woodruff PE Center against the Rhodes College Lynx before hitting the road again for the remainder of March.
