Men's Tennis Downs Carnegie Mellon to Open UAA Championships

The Emory University men's tennis team opened the 2022 University Athletic Association Championships with a convincing win Thursday morning, defeating Carnegie Mellon University at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, FL.

The Eagles, who entered the conference field as the No. 4 seeded team, defeated the No. 5 seeded Tartans, 6-1, and will advance to tomorrow's semifinals to face the No. 1 seed Case Western Reserve at 12:30 PM. The Spartans cruised to the 5-0 decision over NYU in their opening round match on Thursday.

Emory began the morning winning two out of three in doubles play with victories coming on courts one and three. Senior Andrew Esses and sophomore Nolan Shah opened the match with an 8-4 victory at the No. 1 spot. CMU answered with an 8-4 win of their own over senior Antonio Mora and junior Samuel Dean on court two. Senior Sahil Raina and sophomore Ryan Glanville were able to send the Eagles into singles action with the 2-1 advantage however with the 8-3 win on court three.

In singles, the Eagles coasted to the match win with straight set wins on four courts. Mora was the first to reach a conclusion with his 6-2, 6-1 win at first singles before Esses followed with a 6-2, 6-3 win at the second spot.

The match was decided with simultaneous wins at the third and fifth positions with graduate student Santiago Suarez posting a 6-2, 6-4 triumph on five and Shah adding the 6-0, 6-4 win on three.
