2017 Emory Men's Outdoor Track & Field Season Recap

2017 Emory Men's Outdoor Track & Field Season Recap

The Emory University Men's Track and Field team sent one runner to the NCAA Championships while two other performers captured University Athletic Association titles during the 2017 outdoor season.

Junior Shane Sullivan qualified for the NCAA Division III Outdoor National Championships for the first time in his career as he was selected to compete in the 5000m Run. Sullivan turned in a 14th place finish, recording a time of 15:00.27. Earlier in the season, Sullivan broke the school record in the event, posting a time of 14:24.23 at the Dr. Keeler Invitational. The record was one of two Sullivan broke on the year as he was also part of the Distance Medley Relay along with seniors Brandon Cromer, Michael McBane and freshman Samuel Branson which recorded a time of 10:23.10 at the Emory Invitational.

At the UAA Outdoor Championships held in Chicago, Illinois, juniors Benjamin Rogin and Charlie Hu led the Eagles to a fifth place showing, total two event championships. For the third straight season, Rogin was an All-UAA finisher in the 110m Hurdles, collecting his second straight UAA crown with a time of 15.11. Hu scored in three events including a first place effort in the Triple Jump.

Sullivan added All-UAA honors with a second place performance in the 5000m Run while senior Kyle Veator was second in the Long Jump and sophomore Bennett Shaw placed second in the 3000m Steeplechase. In total, the Eagles secured five All-UAA finishes, two event titles and scored 78 points at the two-day championship meet.

In other scored meets throughout the outdoor season, Emory was seventh in its home invitational, third in the Emory Classic, second in the Berry Field Day Invitational and sixth at the Mountain Laurel Invitational.

Four of the five team members that earned All-UAA acclaim were honored by the USTFCCCA, earning All-Region accolades. Hu in the Triple Jump, Rogin in the 110m Hurdles, Shaw in the 3000m Steeplechase and Sullivan in the 5000m Run.

Hu, Rogin and junior Max Brown added academic honors to go along with their on-field performances as the trio was selected to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District team in late May. The selection was the second straight for both Brown and Rogin while Hu earned his first Academic All-District honor of his career.
