Track & Field Teams Open Indoor Season at BSC Icebreaker, Shatter Shot Put Records

The Emory University Track and Field teams kicked off the indoor season on Friday with the Birmingham-Southern Icebreaker held at the Crossplex in Birmingham, Alabama. There was no team scoring at the meet, but senior Greta Wilker and freshman Wheeler Wilson set new marks for the women's and men's team in the indoor shot put.

For the men, freshman Wheeler Wilson shattered the Emory indoor shotput record in his debut with a 15.04m heave on his first attempt. The previous record was 14.77m, a mark recorded by Ben Euwer in 2012. Sophomore Patrick Crockett set a new PR with a toss of 13.07m and freshman Michael Tiffin's best hurl was 11.83m. In the long jump, sophomore Ben Kronman recorded a distance of 5.80m, while freshman Jason Huang covered 5.45m in his first collegiate event.

On the track, sophomore Jason Berger set a new career indoor mark in the 800m Run, crossing after 2:10.38. Sophomores Lucas Werner and Graham Scott registered times of 9.03 and 9.45 in the 60m hurdles, respectively. Scott also participated in the 200m Dash, which saw him finish in 24.66. Senior Alex Rand led Emory in the 200m, with a 23.56, while Kronman (24.72) was close behind. Rand also paced the Eagles in the 400m Dash, as he finished in 52.10. Following Rand, was Werner with a 52.65, and freshman David Gibbons, who ran it in a time of 54.60. Sophomore Jacob Solomon was the first Emory runner to finish in the 60m Dash, running it in 7.34. Huang produced a 7.58 in his 60m heat.

The women's team was led by senior Greta Wilker, who improved upon her own indoor shot put school-record with a 12.47m throw. Wilker's previous record of 12.32m was recorded last season. Additional participants in the shot put included junior Laura Sheckter (11.95m) and freshman Peyton Rees (9.38m). Rees led Emory in the women's weight throw, as she concluded with a 11.34m throw, while Sheckter finished with a 11.34m chuck. Sophomore Oceane De Greef (10.95m) slightly trailed Sheckter in the competition. Closing out Emory's participants in the field events, sophomore Rebekah Bondi jumped 5.20m in the long jump.

Bondi was the top-performing Eagle in two different events, as she also ran her 60m Dash in a career-best 7.84. Freshman Ella Lavelle came up with a 7.86 in her first appearance in a collegiate 60m. Junior Michelle Rosenblum (8.26) also ran in the 60m. In the hurdles, freshman Claire Evans raced to a 9.55 in the 60m. Freshman Becca Cohen also got her first taste of collegiate sprinting as she debuted in the 60m hurdles. Rosenblum competed in the 200m and sprinted to a time of 26.95. The women's 800m race saw sophomore Grace Formichella come away with a 2:26.69. Fellow sophomore Hannah Lansberry's 800m came in under a minute, as she finished in 59.60, while freshman Abby Baisley finished with a 1:02.32. The women's 4x400m relay team, which consisted of EvansLavelleBaisley and Formichella, combined for an effort of 4:18.86.

The Eagles will take a short hiatus for finals and holiday break before returning to competition on January 11th with the UAB Vulcan Invitational.
