Emory Softball Defeats Rochester

Emory Softball Defeats Rochester

The Emory softball team opened its week-long Invitational on a successful note Monday, registering a victory over the University of Rochester. The Eagles upped their record to 4-3 following a 5-3 decision over the Yellowjackets who slipped to 1-5.

Sophomore Natalie Arreguin and freshman Mattie Ryan each hit safely twice to key the Eagles' eight-hit attack.  Arreguin drove in a pair of runs, her seventh and eighth of the young campaign, while Ryan added one RBI to the cause.

Emory struck in the bottom of the first after junior Sarah Katz delivered a one-out triple to left field and then scored after Arreguin singled up the middle.  After Rochester took the lead by scoring single runs in the third and fourth innings, the Eagles knotted the score in their half of the fourth with Ryan leading off with a double and then being lifted for pinch runner Drew Bullock. Bullock moved to third following a fielder's choice and then motored home via a sacrifice fly off the bat of Greta Wilker.  Emory took the lead for good thanks to a three-run fifth inning that was started with a bases-loaded single by Arreguin that scored Baylee Walls.  A walk to Ryan forced in Cassie Baca from third while a ground out by sophomore Meghan Murphy knocked in the final run.

Sophomore hurler Madison Schaefer drew the start and picked up the win after going the first five innings and allowing three runs on five hits. Senior Toko Miller pocketed her second save of the campaign after tossing two scoreless frames.

Emory returns to action on Tuesday when it squares off against Rochester in a scheduled 2:30 pm start.
