The Emory softball team broke out the bats Thursday afternoon as the Eagles posted a sweep of a doubleheader at Covenant College. Emory notched a five-inning, 8-0 triumph in the opener before coming away with an 11-7 verdict in the nightcap. Emory now stands 10-4 on the year while Covenant slipped to 7-10.

In the opener, junior Sarah Katz headlined the offensive attack, going 2-for-2 at the plate with three RBIs and a pair of runs scored while senior shortstop Cassie Baca hit safely twice in three plate appearances. Both of Katz's hits were of the extra-base variety. Sophomore pitcher Madison Schaefer went all five innings in the circle, allowing just two hits, to pick up her third win in four decisions. Emory scored its first run in the top of the first with Baca singling in senior Jenna Wilson, who drew a one-out walk and then proceeded to steal second. The Eagles broke the game open in their half of the third when a Katz three-bagger cleared the bases to account for the first three of a four-run frame. Emory then tacked up three more scores in the fifth, highlighted by sophomore Meghan Murphy knocking in Katz with a single, and Jessy McLean plating Murphy with a single.

Seven players accounted for Emory's 11-hit effort in the finale with junior Natalie Arreguin, senior Lana Herrmann and senior Sam Vincent all collecting two hits. Holding a 2-1 advantage, the Eagles crossed the plate four times in the fourth ignited by a two-run double by Hermmann that scored freshman Mattie Ryan and junior Sami Feller. Later in the uprising, Wilson singled in both Herrmann and Vincent. The Scots battled back to within a 8-7 count after putting up five runs in the bottom of the sixth, but Emory responded with three runs in its half of the seventh that saw Arreguin and Baca deliver run-producing singles. Senior Madeline Maday drew the start and pocketed the victory, upping her record to 3-1, after hurling the first five innings before giving way to senior Toko Miller who earned her third save of the campaign, allowing one unearned run and fanning two over the last two innings.

Emory returns to action on Sunday (Mar. 24) when it hosts LaGrange College in a doubleheader starting at 1:00 pm.
