The Emory softball team closed out its opening weekend of University Athletic Association action with a sweep of a Saturday home doubleheader against Carnegie Mellon.  The Eagles registered a 4-1 decision in the first contest before breaking through for a six-inning, 10-2 verdict in the second affair.  The two wins allowed Emory to sweep the four-game set against the Tartans while boosting its overall record to 18-4 (4-0 UAA) while CMU now stands 5-11 overall, 0-4 in the league.

In the opener, Emory's Madeline Maday and the Tartans' Scotty McGee matched goose eggs in the circle before CMU struck for its run in the top of the fifth. The Eagles did all of their offensive damage in their half of the sixth, making the most of a pair of CMU fielding miscues, combined with a two-run triple from senior Cassie Baca and a sacrifice fly by Jessy McLean. Maday went the distance in securing her fifth victory in six outings, crafting a five hitter and striking out a pair of Tartans.  

Emory earned its second run-rule triumph of the series in the finale, rapping out 11 hits (eighth double-figure mark of the year), four of which were the extra-base variety. Baca scored three runs while Sami Feller and Greta Wilker each hit safely twice while driving in a pair of runs. Emory tacked up runs in five of the six innings played en route to registering its fourth game this season of 10 or more runs. Holding a 3-0 lead, the Eagles extended their cushion by crossing the plate twice in the third inning. Baca led off with a triple, her fifth three-bagger of the campaign (tying for ninth on the program's seasonal ladder), and then scored on a sacrifice by Natalie Arreguin.  Sophomore Meghan Murphy accounted for the other run of the frame when she doubled in Feller. The Eagles took total command in their next at-bat, generating some two-out magic that saw them push pair of runs across the plate. Sarah Katz came through with a single and then moved to second after Baca drew a walk.  Feller then stepped into the box and socked a triple that plated the two Emory runners on base. Senior hurler Toko Miller tossed all six innings in upping her season ledger to 6-1, surrendering just five hits and fanning a pair while not allowing a walk.

Emory returns to action next Friday and Saturday (Apr. 5-6) when it plays a four-game UAA series at Washington University.
